At-Bay vs Coterie Insurance

Distinguish At-Bay’s technology and cyber policies from Coterie’s small-business base policies and optional cyber endorsement.

Introduction

A small software consultancy leasing an office may need both premises protection and coverage for its work. At-Bay’s Tech E&O combines professional liability with cyber protection. Coterie’s core offering includes a business owner’s policy, or BOP, combining liability and property; it also markets a cyber endorsement. Those structures can complement each other rather than replace the same policy. 2 15 25

Where Each Provider Shines

Where At-Bay Shines

  • Tech E&O combines professional liability and cyber protection. 2
  • Stance pairs eligible policies with monitoring, training and cyber advisors; MDR costs extra. 7

Where Coterie Insurance Shines

  • Agents can use prefilled business details to customize quotes and bind eligible small-business policies in one dashboard. 18,19,15
  • Policyholders can access documents, generate certificates, request changes and start claims online, with their agent handling coverage questions. 23,21

Key Differences Between at-Bay and Coterie Insurance

An Endorsement Is Not a Technology Policy

Coterie’s cyber offering is recorded as an optional addition, not a standalone cyber catalogue entry. Ask to see its limits, response services and triggering events beside the At-Bay proposal. The presence of the word cyber in both does not establish protection for the same customer performance dispute or systems outage. 28 2

Both Routes Involve an Insurance Professional

Coterie is an MGA and platform built primarily for agents, brokers and distribution partners; business owners are directed to an agent. At-Bay likewise documents a broker quoting workflow. This is a comparison of products your agent may investigate, not two direct marketplaces promising competing insurer panels. 14 19 6

Offices and Professional Work Need Separate Eligibility Answers

Coterie’s policyholder FAQ calls for a separate policy at each business location. Its MPL geography statements also differ across general marketing and the product guide. For an expanding consultancy, count the locations and identify the accepted professional activities before comparing an aggregate premium with At-Bay’s MPL or Tech E&O quote. 23 27 18 4

What to Confirm in Quotes

Have the agent separate office property, premises liability, professional work and cyber incidents in the proposal. Request California eligibility for each product, the cyber endorsement and any combined Tech E&O form, location schedules, and itemized policy and risk-program fees. Coterie’s published fee categories and At-Bay’s Embedded Security Fee should be compared by what actually applies to the account. 21 7

Service Comparison

At-Bay vs Coterie Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaAt-BayCoterie Insurance
Business role

At-Bay offers cyber, technology errors and omissions (Tech E&O), and miscellaneous professional liability insurance. Its disclosed producer, At-Bay Insurance Services LLC, is a property and casualty agency and surplus lines broker; its website says coverage is underwritten by non-admitted insurers. 1,5

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 14,19,32

Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 21,14,35,36

Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 14,32,33,35

Application process

At-Bay describes a broker workflow of completing an application, adjusting limits and retentions, reviewing documents, selecting an effective date, and satisfying contingencies and signature requirements before binding. Brokers can also email submissions to underwriting. An online quote is not itself bound coverage. 6,4

A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 18,19,15

Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 19,21

Availability

At-Bay lists California P&C and surplus-lines license number 0L73812 for At-Bay Insurance Services LLC. This is a company disclosure, not an independently checked California Department of Insurance record or confirmation that a particular product is available. 5

The reviewed product and licensing pages do not establish current California eligibility for a specific startup, product and issuing insurer. At-Bay warns that products may not be available in every state, and MPL has state restrictions; obtain California placement confirmation through the broker. 5,2,3,4

Coterie says BOP and general liability are admitted products across all 50 states. That is not account-level availability: its terms make every product subject to jurisdiction, business class, underwriting and formal issuance, and temporary catastrophe moratoriums can stop new BOP binding in specified areas. 20,21,31

Coterie's broad broker page says BOP, general liability and professional liability are admitted in all 50 states, but its December 2025 MPL guide says MPL is unavailable in DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota and Virginia. A newer quick-start page narrows the statement to BOP and general liability in all 50 states and MPL in most states. Use the product guide and a current quote for MPL eligibility. 18,20,27

As of September 11, 2026, Coterie says eligible BOP risks 3 to 26 miles from the coast can be considered in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, generally with up to $250,000 of business personal property and no building coverage in the coastal zone. Risks closer than 3 miles remain ineligible under this expansion, and Florida building coverage is unavailable statewide. 30,31

Fees and compensation

Stance access uses an Embedded Security Fee and Endorsement, while MDR is separately purchased. Security costs should be distinguished from the insurance premium and any broker charges. 7

Commission rates, broker compensation arrangements and a complete placement-fee schedule were not disclosed in the reviewed product, platform and US terms pages. This does not establish that commissions or fees are absent; request an itemized quote and compensation disclosure. 2,6,10

Coterie's terms say new and renewal policies have a one-time policy fee whose amount varies, successful installments carry a $7 fee, late fees can be up to $10 and insufficient-funds fees up to $35. Fees vary by state and line, can be nonrefundable, and additional charges must be disclosed before bind or renewal. 21

A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 21

Coterie's privacy policy says it may pay commissions to certain agents through a third-party processor. The reviewed public sources do not state the commission rate or whether additional producer compensation applies to a particular buyer's policy. 22,21
