Armilla vs Coterie Insurance

Separate small-business property and liability placement from insurance for an AI product or deployment.

Introduction

A small consultancy adding an AI tool may need both routine business insurance and a closer look at what happens when its output harms a client. Coterie distributes small-commercial policies through agents, including a business owner’s policy (BOP), general liability and miscellaneous professional liability. Armilla focuses on AI liability, warranties and assessments. These are potentially different parts of the same purchase, not two interchangeable full-business packages. 10 6

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Armilla Shines

  • Dedicated liability coverage for AI model and agent failures 3
  • Model assessments with remediation support and optional retesting 5

Where Coterie Insurance Shines

  • Agents can use prefilled business details to customize quotes and bind eligible small-business policies in one dashboard. 13,14,10
  • Policyholders can access documents, generate certificates, request changes and start claims online, with their agent handling coverage questions. 18,16

Key Differences Between Armilla and Coterie Insurance

Start with the Professional Activity

Coterie’s professional-liability guide is for listed service professions. Armilla’s liability brief describes AI-specific failure modes, including inaccurate outputs and agent mistakes. Before comparing prices, explain whether you advise clients, sell software, deploy another vendor’s model, or do several of these things. The useful comparison is between insured activities and loss triggers; miscellaneous professional liability should not be relabeled technology E&O simply because a business uses technology. 22 3

Coterie’s BOP adds a separate property-and-liability question. An AI proposal does not resolve what must be insured at your premises, and the coverage table is a list of marketed products rather than a combined offer to your company. 12 3

The Agent Workflow and the Technical Workstream

Coterie describes agents confirming prefilled business details, selecting an industry and customizing eligible policies in its dashboard. It is not a direct consumer marketplace. Armilla starts its described process with an AI assessment and then tailors an insurance or warranty plan. For this buyer, premises and business-class information belong alongside a separate explanation of model behavior and promised results. 14 13 2

Armilla also offers remediation support and optional retesting. Those technical services should be scoped separately from the agent’s work arranging and maintaining Coterie coverage; neither process description establishes a guaranteed issue date. 5 16

Product Geography Needs Its Own Check

Coterie's broad broker page says BOP, general liability and professional liability are admitted in all 50 states, but its December 2025 MPL guide says MPL is unavailable in DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota and Virginia. A newer quick-start page narrows the statement to BOP and general liability in all 50 states and MPL in most states. Use the product guide and a current quote for MPL eligibility. 13,15,22

Armilla’s California placement route also remains unresolved in the reviewed public disclosures. A broad geographic statement on either side cannot replace confirmation for the specific profession, model use and policy being proposed. 1

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Have the agent identify the eligible Coterie profession and show how the proposed MPL wording treats the AI-assisted service you actually sell. 22
  • Ask whether the Armilla proposal is liability insurance or a contractual warranty, and specify the model, activity and intended beneficiary. 2
  • Obtain product-specific California confirmation and assign responsibility for policy changes, model updates and any retesting after launch. 16 18 1 5

Service Comparison

Armilla vs Coterie Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaArmillaCoterie Insurance
Business role

Armilla markets AI liability insurance, performance warranties and model assessments. It describes its insurance operation as a managing general agent (MGA), an intermediary with underwriting responsibilities, and names Armilla Insurance Services as a Lloyd’s coverholder. These descriptions do not make Armilla the risk-bearing insurer. 3,1,6

Florida’s corporate registry lists Armilla Insurance Services Inc., a Delaware corporation. This establishes a corporate identity, not an insurance license or authority to place a California risk. 8

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 9,14,27

Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 16,9,30,31

Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 9,27,28,30

Application process

Armilla’s insurance FAQ says to begin with an AI risk assessment, followed by a tailored insurance or warranty plan. The site directs buyers to contact its team; coverage requires written confirmation and completion of underwriting requirements. 2,1

A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 13,14,10

Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 14,16

Availability

Armilla says its insurance products use surplus-lines insurers and properly licensed surplus-lines brokers, with availability varying by jurisdiction. The reviewed disclosures do not establish a California placement route for a particular applicant; a Bay Area address alone does not establish eligibility. 1,3

Coterie says BOP and general liability are admitted products across all 50 states. That is not account-level availability: its terms make every product subject to jurisdiction, business class, underwriting and formal issuance, and temporary catastrophe moratoriums can stop new BOP binding in specified areas. 15,16,26

As of September 11, 2026, Coterie says eligible BOP risks 3 to 26 miles from the coast can be considered in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, generally with up to $250,000 of business personal property and no building coverage in the coastal zone. Risks closer than 3 miles remain ineligible under this expansion, and Florida building coverage is unavailable statewide. 25,26

Servicing and renewals

Armilla Verified evaluates model performance, fairness, security and robustness. Armilla describes scoping, testing, remediation support and an internal report, with a badge conditional on meeting benchmarks. Optional monitoring and retesting are offered as models change. 5

The reviewed assessment and insurance pages do not disclose insurance renewal procedures or whether ongoing model monitoring is included in the premium. Optional assessment support should be priced and scoped separately in the proposal. 5,2

Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 18,16

Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 18

Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 16
