Is AIG Legit? Licensing, Insurers and Reliability

AIG has no Carrier & MGA Spot Score because the reviewed evidence is insufficient for a numerical assessment. Spot Scores assess documented reliability within the reviewed scope; they do not predict claims payment.

Assessment

Assessment status unavailable

This partial Carrier & MGA Spot Score covers licensing and authority and how clearly it explains its terms. It uses 25% of the rubric's factor weighting, normalized to a ten-point scale. Anything without enough evidence is left out, not scored as zero.

Assessment subject unavailable

Evidence and Scope

Role: Carrier. Scope: AIG's U.S. commercial property-and-casualty carriers, mainly National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, Pa., American Home Assurance Company, Illinois National Insurance Co. and, for surplus lines, Lexington Insurance Company. American International Group, Inc. is parent context. A specific policy's issuer must be confirmed on its declarations page.

Entity and assessment scope

AIG says it is the marketing name for American International Group, Inc.’s worldwide operations and that insurance products and services are written or provided by subsidiaries or affiliates. AIG’s legal notice names the U.S.-domiciled P&C affiliates and the disclosed rows are transcribed in licensing-disclosure.json. The notice warns that inclusion does not guarantee coverage or authority for a particular product. It does not assign a particular product or policy to an insurer.[1][2]

Authority and domicile

AIG’s notice names U.S.-domiciled P&C subsidiaries and affiliates and publishes their domiciles, printed NAIC numbers, licensed-to-transact jurisdictions and surplus-lines eligibility. It defines licensed jurisdictions as those for which a certificate of authority has been issued and distinguishes surplus-lines eligibility. This is provider-published information accessed 2026-09-29, not independent regulator verification. AIG expressly says the list does not guarantee that a company will insure a buyer or offer a particular product in a jurisdiction. The actual insurer on a quote or policy is not mapped by this brand-level disclosure.[1]

California's Department of Insurance lists National Union (0131-3) and American Home (1006-6) as Property & Casualty companies with UNLIMITED-NORMAL status, and Lexington (4571-6) as an accredited reinsurer with license status N/A. These checks confirm the named companies exist and are licensed or not licensed in California. They do not show which company writes any one policy.[17][18][19]

Financial condition and external financial strength ratings

AM Best's June 18, 2026 review reports an A (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating and a+ (Excellent) Issuer Credit Rating, both with positive outlook and affirmed action, for Rating Unit 058702, American International Group, Inc.; the rating unit lists American Home, AIG Property Casualty, Lexington, National Union, AIU and other members. These are rating-unit ratings and must not be presented as independent company-specific grades. The same page separately reports a bbb+ holding-company ICR for the parent.[4]

AIG's 2025 Form 10-K reports General Insurance statutory capital and surplus of $28.664 billion in aggregate at December 31, 2025 ($17.874 billion domestic and $10.790 billion foreign), and aggregate minimum required statutory capital and surplus of $10.350 billion ($3.880 billion domestic and $6.470 billion foreign). Note 18 marks the 2025 statutory net-income and reported capital-and-surplus rows with footnotes (a) and (b); those marked figures reflect AIG's best estimate as of the Form 10-K filing date, February 12, 2026. The separate minimum-required line is unmarked and is not assigned that estimate qualification. The filing separately states that all domestic and foreign insurance subsidiaries individually exceeded minimum required statutory capital and surplus at December 31, 2025 and 2024. These are aggregate group figures, not the capital or results of any selected issuing company; individual statutory statements were not reviewed in this packet.[6][5]

Claims, servicing and responsibility

AIG publishes claim-reporting routes for insureds and brokers for named commercial lines and describes IntelliRisk functions for reporting, claim information and loss reports. AIG reports 850+ dedicated North America claims professionals with specialized expertise by lines of business and specific products; it says claims across all lines are assigned by degree of complexity and that it partners with third-party experts. These are company-reported operating descriptions; they do not establish a separate claims team for every risk solution or identify the claim administrator, delegated decision-maker, service standards, oversight controls or escalation for each issuing insurer and program. The policy and its declarations remain necessary to identify the responsible legal insurer.[8][9][10]

Reinsurance and capacity

AIG's 2025 SEC filing says its insurance companies buy treaty and facultative reinsurance, evaluates reinsurer credit and concentration, and remains directly liable to policyholders regardless of reinsurer performance. It names National Indemnity Company for a legacy U.S. commercial long-tail reserve agreement limited to accident years 2015 and prior, and Fortitude Re for the majority of run-off operations. This documents group-level reinsurance controls and legacy counterparties, not the current reinsurance panel, terms, or durability supporting each new commercial policy or named issuing company.[7]

The filing reports $40.7 billion of group reinsurance recoverables at year-end 2025, including amounts AIG itself classifies as investment grade, non-investment grade and unrated. These aggregate disclosures do not identify the reinsurance supporting any current commercial program.[7]

Regulatory conduct search and findings

Within the five-year period ending September 28, 2026, New York DFS's March 18, 2024 consent order named National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, PA. For specified New York affected groups, DFS found blanket accident-and-health policies failed minimum loss-ratio standards during 2016–2021; those groups were overcharged an aggregate $8,377,825. Separately, DFS found that intercollegiate sports-injury policies issued during 2015–2021 included prohibited indemnity-based and non-treatment benefits. The order required retroactive rebates reflecting the shortfall and a $5.6 million civil penalty. These findings concern specified blanket A&H and sports-injury policies, not current commercial P&C generally.[11]

New York DFS's November 27, 2023 consent order named ten AIG insurers, including American Home, AIG Property Casualty, National Union and AIU. The matter concerned late vehicle-registration information reporting during 2018; the order required remediation and imposed a $592,000 total civil penalty. The underlying conduct period predates the order and concerns motor-vehicle reporting, not commercial P&C conduct generally.[12]

Missouri DOI's National Union company record lists a market-regulation action dated September 19, 2025. The existence of an action is verified, but the subject, findings and outcome are unknown and remain unresolved. A separate NYDFS 2025 item names 'AIG Property Casualty Insurance Company,' which does not exactly match 'AIG Property Casualty Company'; no corporate source reviewed here established that legal entity's relationship to the assessed AIG insurer, so it is not attributed to that entity.[3][13][15]

Role, compensation and conflicts

AIG's public legal notice distinguishes the AIG marketing name, parent and subsidiary/affiliate insurers, but does not map each policy to its issuer. Its U.S. producer-compensation disclosure says insurer affiliates pay commissions and may pay contingent compensation based on measures including production, persistency or profitability; it describes internal controls and directs buyers to producers for policy-specific information. The page's reporting covers specified U.S. business written in 2024 and excludes listed product lines and arrangements, including life and annuity, accident-and-health business, captive/exclusive-agent business and Talbot. It does not disclose compensation on an individual buyer's policy or eliminate producer conflicts.[1][16]

Evidence gaps

  • AIG’s complete U.S.-domiciled P&C company list and broad license/eligibility jurisdictions are transcribed from its own notice and treated as trustworthy company-reported evidence. Product-specific insurer assignments remain unknown because the notice itself makes no such assignment.
  • No specific policy-to-issuing-company mapping; AIG's published U.S.-domiciled P&C company list is fully transcribed, but its notice disclaims policy-specific issuer inference.
  • No individual statutory capital, surplus, results or financial strength rating for each named operating insurer was assessed; available AIG figures are group aggregate and AM Best coverage is a rating unit.
  • No complete current reinsurance treaty schedule, capacity panel, terms, collateral, renewal history or mapping from any program to its issuer and reinsurers. Named NICO/Fortitude arrangements are legacy or run-off scope.
  • Claims responsibility, delegated administrators, entity-specific oversight, service standards, complaint escalation and claims performance remain unverified by issuing company and program.
  • The 2025 Missouri action against National Union is listed on the regulator's record, but the matter and outcome are unknown.
  • Regulatory conduct review was scoped to the New York DFS enforcement index and Missouri DOI records for selected named entities; it was not a search of every state regulator, federal court, or all regulator datasets. No clean-record conclusion is supported.
  • A 2025 New York DFS action names 'AIG Property Casualty Insurance Company'; its relationship to 'AIG Property Casualty Company' is unresolved and the action is not attributed to the latter.
  • Producer compensation disclosures are company-reported and based on 2024 U.S. business. Individual policy compensation and any producer-specific agreement are unknown.
  • Illinois National Insurance Co.'s license in California hasn't been confirmed. No state other than California, New York and Missouri was checked against regulator records.
  • AM Best's rating covers the whole AIG rating unit. An individual grade for each named commercial insurer hasn't been confirmed.
