Does an IT Consultant Need E&O Insurance?
IT consultants should consider professional E&O because clients can allege advice, configuration, implementation, or other services caused financial loss.
Texas DOI includes IT consulting among examples of professional services, and III lists IT consultants among professions that should consider professional liability. Work can range from recommendations to security services, integration, data migration, and software configuration. The policy should match services actually performed; some work may fit Tech E&O, while other consulting may fit a miscellaneous professional form. Give the insurer accurate service descriptions. Check subcontractor coverage, data and security exclusions, contractual liability, client indemnity terms, retroactive date, and reporting requirements. If you handle client systems or personal data, compare E&O terms with separate cyber coverage.
Separate recommendations from hands-on configuration or implementation, because a quote may schedule these activities differently. Ask whether public-sector or regulated clients require a special endorsement.
Keep the description current when adding managed services, cloud administration, or security testing, since an old application may omit new exposures.
