Product Liability vs. General Liability: What’s the Difference?

Product liability addresses certain injury or property-damage claims tied to products; general liability is broader and can include premises and other third-party risks.

Commercial general liability can include several liability exposures, such as premises claims and products-completed operations. California’s Commercial Insurance Guide discusses both premises and products liability; the Insurance Information Institute describes product liability as protection for manufacturers, distributors, or sellers facing claims tied to a defective product. Product liability may therefore be a coverage section or a separate policy, not necessarily a substitute for general liability.

Compare the actual insuring agreements, products-completed operations limits, exclusions, and insured operations. Check whether product claims share an aggregate limit with other liability claims and whether the quote has product-specific restrictions. Some businesses buy standalone products coverage while others rely on a CGL package. Product schedules, limits, and exclusions matter more than the label used in an insurance quote.
