Does Product Liability Cover Imported Products?

It can, if the importer and imported products are insured and the claim falls within the policy’s territory and terms.

Importing does not itself establish whether a policy covers a product or a particular seller. A business that brings a product into the U.S. may be named in a claim along with other parties in the supply chain; the Insurance Information Institute identifies distribution and sale of products made elsewhere as potential liability exposures. The CPSC also places safety and reporting responsibilities on some importers of consumer products within its jurisdiction.

Disclose the importer role, product names, manufacturing country, sales destinations, and any private-label arrangements when requesting a quote. Confirm the insured entity, territory, foreign-judgment wording, and product-specific exclusions. Insurance does not replace applicable product-safety or reporting duties. CPSC duties apply only to consumer products within that agency’s jurisdiction; some product categories are regulated elsewhere. Identify the relevant regulator and do not treat insurance as satisfying a reporting deadline.
