Does Product Liability Cover Ecommerce?
It may cover product claims from online sales if those products and the business’s distribution role are insured.
Selling through a website does not change the basic product-liability question: whether a third party alleges that a product caused bodily injury or property damage and whether the policy covers that claim. The Insurance Information Institute identifies sellers and distributors as potential insureds, but online businesses may use several sales channels, private-label products, and overseas suppliers that need to be disclosed.
Check the quote for every product, legal entity, marketplace, and territory. Review products-completed operations limits, exclusions, and any contractual additional-insured requests. A policy that covers a company’s services or premises does not necessarily insure every product it lists online. Keep online product listings, seller accounts, and legal entities aligned with the named insured. If a marketplace requests proof, verify any required additional-insured status in the actual endorsement.
