What Does Kidnap and Ransom Insurance Cover?

Depending on the policy, it may cover ransom and other specified expenses tied to covered kidnapping, extortion, detention, or threat events.

K&R coverage is built from insuring agreements and defined events, not a universal list. Chubb’s U.S. product page lists ransom, custody, insured-event expenses, accidental loss, legal liability, emergency political repatriation expenses, threat expenses, and optional coverage. It also describes coverage for specified events such as wrongful detention, hijacking, or hostage crisis. The page expressly says actual issued policy language controls.

Review each selected coverage, event definition, limit, retention, covered people, territorial terms, and any consent or reporting condition. Ask whether crisis consultant expenses, evacuation or repatriation, business interruption, and cyber-related extortion are included or need another policy. The Travelers forms directory also provides sample policy forms, which illustrates why you should inspect the issued wording.
