What Does Intellectual Property Insurance Cover?

It may cover specified costs or liabilities from an IP dispute, but the rights, claim type, legal expenses, and damages included depend on the policy and selected options.

There is no single standard answer for every policy sold as IP insurance. The NAIC lists copyright, trademark, and patent infringement claims as examples. Specialist products can divide protection into defense of allegations, pursuit of infringers, and contractual indemnity. CFC describes those sections in its own product materials; those statements explain its offering and should not be generalized to all insurers.

A proposal may be limited to named rights, products, territories, or claim types. A defense section may not include enforcement of your rights, and legal expense coverage may not include every judgment or settlement. Check whether attorney fees, expert costs, investigation, settlement, or damages are covered and whether legal costs reduce limits. Review retention, coinsurance, consent rules, and exclusions with the coverage grant. Ask for the actual form and endorsements before binding; a product page or quote summary may omit restrictions that matter to your risk.
