Does General Liability Cover Liquor Liability?

Often not for injury or damage tied to serving or selling alcohol. Standard forms commonly exclude liquor liability, though limited exceptions or a separate liquor endorsement may be available.

A business that sells, serves, manufactures, or facilitates alcohol should review liquor liability separately from general CGL. Triple-I states that standard CGL does not protect a business against liquor-related claims unless the extra coverage is purchased, and notes liquor liability may be available as an add-on or standalone policy. The ISO specimen includes an exclusion for bodily injury or property damage for which an insured may be liable because of causing or contributing to intoxication, furnishing alcohol to minors, or violating alcohol laws. A narrow exception can apply to an insured not in the business of manufacturing, distributing, selling, serving, or furnishing alcohol.

That exception is not a blanket solution for restaurants, bars, caterers, event hosts, or venues. Check the policy’s liquor exclusion, state law, covered operations, event endorsements, limits, and any third-party vendor requirements. Confirm whether the policy covers the entity that serves alcohol and the event dates and locations, rather than assuming ordinary premises liability is enough.
