Does General Liability Cover Events?

It may cover specified third-party injury or property-damage liability at a covered event, but the policy must include the activity, location, dates, and any required event endorsements.

A business’s CGL can respond to covered third-party bodily injury or property damage arising from its operations, which may include an event if the activity is within the policy’s scope. Coverage is not established simply because the business has a general liability certificate. The ISO form limits coverage by insured status, occurrence, policy period, territory, and exclusions. Alcohol service, hired venues, participant activities, temporary structures, and rented equipment may each raise separate issues.

Tell the broker the event’s location, dates, expected activities, attendance, vendors, alcohol service, and whether a venue or sponsor needs additional-insured status. Ask for any special-event endorsement and verify its exclusions, limits, and insured parties. Confirm that the endorsement is attached to the issued policy and that its dates cover setup and teardown if needed. Review event contracts against the actual coverage rather than relying on a generic certificate.
