How Much Does D&O Insurance Cost?
There is no single standard price; premiums depend on the company’s risk, requested limits, retention, coverage terms, and underwriting information.
There is no single standard D&O premium. Insurers assess risk in underwriting, and price depends on the policy and company being insured; a public estimate is not a quote for your company. Compare offers with the same insured entities, limit, retention, coverage terms, and claims-made dates. Review the quote’s exclusions, defense-cost treatment, and endorsements alongside the premium. If offers differ in coverage, a lower number may reflect a narrower policy rather than a better price. Ask the broker what risk information the insurer considered and which requested terms account for differences among quotes.
For a sound comparison, ask each insurer which company details affected its underwriting and whether changing the limit or retention changes the quoted premium. Those details may differ by carrier, so do not assume a single rating formula. D&O cost should be compared with the breadth of Side A/B/C grants, not just the total limit shown on a summary. A lower quote may have a narrower entity grant, more restrictive prior-acts terms, or a shared limit with EPLI. Request the full forms and endorsements and compare the same insured entities, retroactive date, defense-cost treatment, exclusions, and retention before choosing between prices.
