How Much Umbrella Insurance Does My Business Need?

There is no single limit that fits every business. Compare contract requirements and potential liability severity with available underlying limits and umbrella terms.

The limit decision depends on the business’s operations, vehicles, contracts, assets, and the maximum loss it wants to transfer. California’s guide explains what umbrella limits do but does not prescribe a universal amount. The amount requested by a customer or landlord may be a contractual minimum rather than a full assessment of your exposure.

A quoted limit can also be constrained by which underlying policies are scheduled, the minimum underlying limits the insurer requires, exclusions, and whether the umbrella has its own aggregate. A higher limit does not solve an excluded exposure or a mismatch between underlying and umbrella wording.

Gather contracts, current declarations, vehicle and payroll information, and claims history for the broker. Request options at different limits and compare the premium, attachment point, retention, exclusions, and aggregate wording rather than choosing by limit alone.
