How Much Does Commercial Umbrella Insurance Cost?

There is no reliable universal price. Premiums depend on the business, scheduled policies, limits, operations, and insurer’s underwriting; compare quotes on matching terms.

The regulator’s commercial insurance guide explains that commercial premiums are developed using risk characteristics, classifications, coverage limits, deductibles, and other rating information. Umbrella pricing can also depend on which underlying lines and limits are scheduled, the business’s operations and claims history, and the amount of excess limit selected. No single public rate applies to every company.

A quote may differ because one insurer requires higher underlying limits, includes different exclusions, or uses a different attachment point or retention. Taxes, fees, installment charges, and broker compensation should not be confused with premium, and a lower quoted figure may reflect narrower coverage.

For an apples-to-apples comparison, request the same limit, underlying policies, attachment points, aggregate terms, exclusions, and policy period. Ask for itemized premium and fees, any minimum earned premium, and the assumptions used to classify your operations.
