Does Commercial Auto Insurance Cover Tools in a Vehicle?

Usually, commercial auto coverage protects the vehicle and auto liability, not the tools inside it. Tools may need business property or inland marine coverage with terms for property in transit.

Auto liability covers the insured’s legal responsibility for covered injury or property damage arising from use of a covered auto. Collision and comprehensive address damage to the vehicle, not automatically the contents carried in it. NAIC describes comprehensive auto coverage as applying to non-collision events such as theft or weather damage to the insured vehicle; that does not mean it pays for stolen tools.

California’s commercial guide identifies inland marine as a specialized property line that can cover business property while in transport, including contractors’ equipment floaters. Whether tools are insured away from the premises depends on the chosen form, covered property, territory, limits, and exclusions.

Review the commercial auto quote separately from any inland marine or business property schedule. Ask whether tools are covered in an unattended vehicle, overnight, during loading, and at job sites; check theft conditions, per-item limits, deductibles, and proof-of-value requirements.
