Does Commercial Auto Insurance Cover Trailers?

Often, a covered auto policy can include certain trailers, but coverage depends on the trailer, towing vehicle, and selected policy terms.

The illustrative ISO Business Auto Coverage Form extends liability coverage to certain trailers with a load capacity of 2,000 pounds or less designed primarily for public roads when covered auto liability applies. That is a form-specific example, not a universal rule for all trailers or all coverages. The form also treats trailer physical damage differently from liability arising from towing.

A heavier or specialized trailer may need to be scheduled, and a trailer used as equipment or for a business-specific operation can raise classification questions. Physical damage to the trailer is not established just because liability coverage follows a covered towing auto.

Give the insurer the trailer’s VIN, ownership, value, load capacity, use, and towing vehicles. Check whether the declarations list the trailer or use a symbol that includes it, whether collision and comprehensive apply, and whether attached equipment or cargo needs separate coverage.
