Does Business Interruption Cover Loan Payments?
They may be included as continuing expenses in a covered business-income loss, but the policy wording and calculation control.
NAIC’s business-interruption overview lists loan payments among expenses policies may cover while the business property cannot be used. Coverage is still conditional on a qualifying covered loss, and a lender’s payment schedule does not determine the insurer’s calculation. A loan payment may contain principal, interest, or other charges that receive different treatment under the policy’s definition of business income.
Review the policy’s covered-income definition and expense treatment, then ask the insurer how scheduled debt service is handled. Check the covered location, trigger, waiting period, limit, restoration period, and records needed to substantiate payments. Do not assume business interruption pays the full loan balance or replaces separate loan-protection insurance.
