Does Builders Risk Cover Wind Damage?
Possibly. Wind damage to covered project property may be insured, but windstorm exclusions, sublimits, and deductibles can change the result.
NAIC’s glossary places windstorm and hail among allied property lines, and the ISO builders risk specimen measures coverage by covered causes of loss and exclusions. A policy may treat ordinary wind differently from named storms or coastal wind exposure. For a project exposed to severe weather, ask whether windstorm is included, excluded, or subject to a separate deductible or percentage limit. Check protection requirements for roofs, openings, scaffolding, and materials, plus whether the policy covers temporary works and cleanup after a covered wind loss. For a building after handover, check the permanent property policy separately because a course-of-construction limit may stop at acceptance or occupancy. Obtain the actual wind wording and declarations page, then compare named-storm restrictions, wind or hail deductibles, roof conditions, and the treatment of temporary fencing, scaffolding, and materials not attached to the structure.
