Does Builders Risk Cover Hail?

Hail damage may be covered when it is a covered cause of loss and the damaged item is insured property.

The NAIC glossary lists hail with allied lines of property insurance, while builders risk is written for construction-stage property. Whether hail reaches the project depends on the selected form, exclusions, and any storm-specific deductible or sublimit. Some exposures involve temporary roofs, partially installed windows, or materials not yet attached to the building. Check how the policy treats those items, the hail deductible, roof or opening safeguards, and any limits applying to property at storage sites rather than the described jobsite. Damage to contractor-owned tools or mobile equipment exposed to the same hailstorm may fall under an equipment floater rather than the building project limit. Identify whether the hail struck installed materials, a temporary roof, or movable property. Ask about any roof-surface limitation, wind-and-hail deductible, project-value basis, and seasonal protection conditions in the quotation.
