Does Builders Risk Cover Engineering Errors?
Not for the professional error itself in many forms; resulting damage may or may not be covered.
The ISO specimen excludes faulty design and specifications, which can include engineering decisions. Professional liability coverage is a separate line for claims arising from professional services, subject to its own terms. Ask whether the issue is the cost to redo an incorrect design or physical damage caused by it; the policy may treat those differently. Review the builders risk ensuing-loss wording, engineer’s professional liability coverage, and any project-specific endorsements before testing or construction proceeds. The engineer’s professional liability insurance may be relevant to an allegation about design or engineering advice, while builders risk addresses only the project property terms. Request both policy wordings and identify the claimed expense: redesign, replacement of defective work, or resulting damage. Check professional-service exclusions, the project schedule, and any builders risk exception for ensuing physical loss.
