Amelia Risk vs Cowbell

Separate a specialist cyber-program decision from the choice of broker for a technology or consumer-product business.

Introduction

A connected-device company choosing cyber insurance still has inventory, employee and product risks to place. Amelia Risk markets a brokerage program spanning those exposures. Cowbell provides cyber and specialty programs through agents, so its product may be a component of a broader insurance arrangement rather than a replacement for the broker coordinating it. 7 8 36 37

Key Differences Between Amelia Risk and Cowbell

Choose the Policy Before Comparing the Platform

Cowbell's Prime Tech combines technology E&O with cyber, while Prime Tech Plus provides excess coverage above eligible underlying insurance. Its cyber-only programs have their own appetites and terms. Amelia separately discusses technology E&O and cyber as placement needs. For a device that fails to perform and also collects customer data, the distinction is which policy responds to which allegation, not whether both proposals contain the word cyber. 44 45 39 17 16

The Broker and Issuer Are Different Choices

Cowbell directs US buyers to agents; Amelia says it represents clients to multiple insurers. Neither statement establishes that Amelia can access a particular Cowbell program. Cowbell names different paper providers across its products, including Palomar Specialty Insurance Company for Prime 100 and Chaucer Specialty Insurance Company for Prime One. Those names cannot be carried over automatically to a Prime Tech quote. 36 39 42 4

Security Services Need Their Own Scope

Cowbell describes risk insights, security support and an around-the-clock cyber claims team, with some resiliency services offered through trials or paid subscriptions. Amelia describes claims advocacy but does not publish a comparable incident-response service specification. That difference helps frame a service request; it does not establish better claim outcomes or that every Cowbell security service is included in premium. 50 49 4

What to Confirm in Quotes

Request the exact primary and excess forms, issuing insurers, California availability and any required security controls. Ask who receives an urgent incident report, who authorizes response vendors, and what services cost extra after a trial. Separately identify the broker responsible for inventory, product liability and workers compensation, and obtain written confirmation of access to the proposed cyber program.

Service Comparison

Amelia Risk vs Cowbell: documented services and availability

CriteriaAmelia RiskCowbell
Business role

Amelia Risk presents itself as an independent, women-owned insurance brokerage—not as an insurer. It says it identifies a company’s risks, discusses insurance products, represents the buyer to insurers, and recommends a program. The official pages reviewed do not name a licensed producer entity suffix, license number, or NPN. 1,2,4,20,19

Cowbell is a specialty-insurance platform and agency, not the insurer named on every policy. Cowbell Insurance Agency LLC says it is a U.S. property-and-casualty producer and may act as a general agent for one or more carriers; the issuing insurer remains responsible for the policy. 29,33,30

Cowbell identifies Zurich as a $60 million Series C investor and partner, while Zurich describes Cowbell as its technology collaborator for Select Plus. The reviewed sources do not describe Cowbell as a Zurich subsidiary or say that Zurich underwrites every Cowbell product. 32,47,31

Coverage lines

Amelia Risk publishes an Insurance Policies catalogue covering general liability and umbrella or excess, stock throughput (cargo), product recall, directors and officers (D&O), employment practices liability (EPL), workers compensation, cyber, and technology errors and omissions (Tech E&O). Specialty pages also list product liability, fiduciary liability, professional liability, a businessowner’s policy (BOP) with property, general liability, and hired and non-owned auto, owned and hired/non-owned auto, and employee crime as policies those clients should consider. Those labels are the firm’s marketed placement topics; they are not specimen forms, and they do not establish that every line is available to every applicant. 9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,5,6,7,8

Cowbell's current U.S. cyber catalogue includes admitted Prime 100 and Prime 100 Pro, non-admitted Prime 250 and Prime One, and follow-form excess Prime Plus. These are separate programs with different revenue appetites, limits, coverage descriptions and jurisdictional bases—not interchangeable versions of one policy. 37,39,40,41,42,43

Prime 100 Pro advertises limits up to $3 million; Prime One advertises up to $10 million for select risks and expressly describes AI-incident and quantum-computing coverage; Prime Plus advertises up to $5 million above a primary cyber policy. All remain subject to underwriting and issued policy terms. 40,42,43

Prime Tech combines non-admitted Technology E&O with cyber coverage for eligible technology businesses up to $1 billion in revenue and advertises limits up to $5 million. Prime Tech Plus is a separate follow-form excess Technology E&O and cyber product with up to $5 million in excess limits. 44,45

Cowbell's U.S. management-liability offering is Zurich Select Plus, a modular product with private-company D&O, employment-practices, fiduciary and crime coverage options. Zurich says appointed Zurich E&S wholesalers access the Cowbell-powered platform; the target is private businesses under 250 employees and under $50 million in assets. 46,47

Cowbell's product overviews say their coverage examples are illustrative and do not amend a policy. Actual coverage, conditions, limits, exclusions, availability and underwriting approval come from the issued policy and can vary by state and product. 39,40,41,42,43,44,45

Application process

New business starts with a conversation or website contact form, not a public self-service binder. Amelia Risk describes four steps: understand the company and gather information; represent the buyer to insurers; review quotes and a recommendation with the client; then the client decides how to proceed. About copy says the firm will not ask clients to complete multiple PDFs or Word documents only to print, sign, and scan them back. A company-hosted interview describes D&O underwriting as possibly a matter of days or a few weeks with completed information, with a two-to-three-week comfortable budget—an illustrative timing comment, not a binding SLA. No public quote calculator or specimen application was found. 4,18,2,5,20,22

A U.S. buyer works through an insurance agent or broker. Cowbell provides a state-filtered agent directory, while appointed agents use Cowbell's platform to quote, bind and issue eligible products; no direct-to-buyer quote path was documented in the reviewed sources. 36,29,37,39

Access to insurers

Amelia Risk says it represents clients to the dozens of insurance companies with which it works and that its vertical focus supports relationships with underwriters, wholesale brokers, and carrier partners. The reviewed pages do not name those insurers, rating agencies, or program administrators, and they do not publish appointment lists. 4,2,21

Cowbell's materials name Palomar Specialty Insurance Company for Prime 100 and Prime 100 Pro, Palomar and Chaucer Specialty Insurance Company for Prime 250, and Chaucer for Prime One. Prime Plus and Prime Tech Plus name only A-rated carrier paper, while the Select Plus page says Zurich admitted paper without naming the issuing legal entity. 39,40,41,42,43,45,46,35

Claims assistance

On its specialties page, Amelia Risk says it will advocate for the client’s needs during claims. A 2021 blog post describes a broker as an advocate at claims time. The pages do not describe a claims intake channel, dedicated claims staff, authority to settle, or claims-handling metrics. 4,21

Cowbell says its in-house cyber claims team and incident-response panel are available around the clock. Its public intake instructions ask for the policy number or company name, the incident date and details, and a point of contact; coverage and claim payment still depend on the issuing insurer and policy. 49,39,42
