Does General Liability Cover Faulty Workmanship?
Usually not the cost to correct your own faulty work. CGL may apply to resulting covered injury or damage to other property, subject to exclusions and exceptions.
A CGL policy is not a warranty that work will be performed correctly. The ISO specimen excludes damage to the particular part of property that must be repaired or replaced because the insured’s work was incorrectly performed. For completed work, it also excludes damage to the insured’s work itself, with a subcontractor exception. Those provisions distinguish the cost of correcting defective work from a separate claim that work caused covered bodily injury or physical damage to other property.
The result depends on what was damaged, who performed the work, whether operations were complete, and the wording in the issued policy. Check the definitions of “your work” and the products-completed operations hazard, the exclusions and exceptions, and any endorsements. Construction contracts may impose repair or warranty obligations that insurance does not automatically assume; ask the broker how those obligations are treated.
