## How it works

- **List your states and your people.** Tell us where your employees work, what each of them does and who is a contractor or part-time. Your Spot team asks about anyone whose status isn’t obvious.
- **We split payroll by the work done.** Spot sorts payroll by job type and state, so the office team and the warehouse crew aren’t described as the same risk.
- **Brokers take it to market.** We work with brokers to ask the insurers or state funds available in each of your states, and follow up on their questions about your submission.
- **Compare how each quote counts your work.** Look at each proposal’s classifications, payroll figures and states before you choose, so you can see why two quotes differ.

## What you’ll need

- **States where you have employees.** Requirements and insurance options differ by state, so every state with staff belongs in the application.
- **Payroll by class code.** Insurers split payroll by the kind of work employees do. Office staff and people doing physical work are classified separately.
- **Job duties for each role.** A plain description of what each role does day to day, so the classification matches the real work.
- **Employees, contractors and part-time staff.** Who works for you and under what arrangement. A job label alone doesn’t decide who counts as a covered employee.
- **Experience modification.** If you have one, your current experience mod from the rating bureau reflects your claims history against similar businesses.
- **Prior claims and loss runs.** Claims from current and past workers’ comp policies, plus any injuries that haven’t become claims yet.
- **Current policy.** Your expiring policy and its dates, so a replacement quote can be compared like for like.

## What affects your price

- **How your work is classified.** Physical, higher-hazard work is rated differently from office work, so the classification on each role matters.
- **Payroll.** Premium is built from payroll, so more payroll in a class generally means more premium.
- **Which states you operate in.** Each state has its own rules and insurance options, and those shape what’s available to you.
- **Claims history.** Past claims affect your experience modification, which can raise or lower the premium.
- **Who is counted as an employee.** Treating a worker as a contractor or as staff changes the payroll the premium is built on.

## Common questions

### Do I need workers’ compensation in every state where I have staff?

Rules differ by state and so do the insurance options, including private insurers and state funds. List each state with employees and your Spot team helps you ask what applies.

### Will my part-time staff and contractors be included?

That depends on the rules in each state, not the job title. Tell us about every worker so the submission describes them accurately.

### Is workers’ comp the same as health insurance?

No. Workers’ compensation addresses work-related injuries and illnesses. Non-work medical care is employee health benefits, which Spot can help with separately.

### Can my broker still place my workers’ comp?

Yes. Spot works alongside brokers and takes no commissions on premiums, so your broker can use the payroll and state details we prepare. You can also move to a different broker.
