# Compare umbrella and excess liability insurance quotes with Spot

An umbrella quote only works if it sits properly above your other policies, so Spot checks the underlying schedule before you compare limits.

- Underlying policies and limits checked against your program
- Attachment and exclusion differences made visible

## How it works

- **Send your liability schedule.** Share the limits and named insureds on your general liability, auto and employers liability policies, plus the contracts that require higher limits.
- **We check each layer’s foundation.** Spot confirms which policies each quote requires underneath, at what limits, and whether your actual policies satisfy them.
- **Ask where it attaches.** Message your Spot team about when each layer begins to pay and what it does when an underlying policy doesn’t respond.
- **Choose and bind.** Select the quote that meets your contracts and fits your underlying policies. Your Spot team helps you bind and prepares the certificate your customer asked for.

## What to compare

- **Underlying schedule.** Which policies and limits must sit beneath the layer. Yours need to match.
- **Attachment.** Whether the layer attaches after a single occurrence limit, an aggregate or another stated threshold.
- **Response without underlying.** Whether it can respond when an underlying policy doesn’t, and what retention applies in that case.
- **Auto and trucking liability.** Whether your commercial auto or trucking liability policy is listed as underlying insurance.
- **Specialty exclusions.** Whether employment practices, professional liability, product recall and similar exposures are included or excluded.
- **Extra coverage over underlying.** What claims the layer covers that the policies underneath do not, so you see what the extra premium adds beyond more limit.
- **Contract-required limits.** How the total limit compares with what your contracts require, and the underlying limits those contracts assume.

## Differences to watch for

- **Auto left out of the schedule.** If auto isn’t scheduled as underlying, a vehicle claim may not reach the extra limits.
- **Underlying limits that don’t match.** A policy below the stated minimum can leave a gap before the layer begins.
- **Exclusions for specialty exposures.** An umbrella that excludes product recall or professional claims won’t substitute for those policies.
- **Named insureds that differ.** If the layer names different parties than your primary policies, protection may not line up.

## Common questions

### What is the difference between umbrella and excess?

Both add limits above underlying policies. Spot reads each quote’s attachment and coverage terms so you see how this one behaves.

### Does an umbrella replace my other liability policies?

No. It sits above them, so those policies’ terms still matter.

### Can Spot check a contract’s required limits?

Yes. Send the contract and Spot compares its limits with each quote.

### Do I have to change brokers?

No. Keep your current broker or pick a new one; Spot works with either and takes no commissions on premiums.
