## How Spot helps

1. **List the liability policies you have.** Your Spot team lists every liability policy you hold, with its limits and named insureds, plus any contract that asks for higher limits, and builds the submission from there.
2. **Check a contract’s required limits.** Send the contract. Spot compares its required limits with your primary limits and the proposed layer, including the underlying limits the contract assumes, and flags any shortfall.
3. **See when each quote starts paying.** Brokers take the layer to market, and we compare each proposal’s underlying schedule, attachment point, specialty exclusions and the retention that applies when a primary policy doesn’t respond.
4. **Get a certificate showing your full limits.** When a general contractor or customer wants a certificate that shows your umbrella limits, ask in your shared Slack channel. Your Spot team gets it ready with the primary and umbrella limits shown together.

## Who we help

- **Contractors on owner and general contractor projects.** A project contract can set a liability limit above what your primary policy carries, and you’ll be asked to show it on a certificate.
- **Fleets and trucking operations.** A serious crash can outrun an auto liability limit, and your auto or trucking policy has to be listed underneath before you count on the layer above it.
- **Companies signing larger customer contracts.** A customer or landlord may name a total liability figure that your primary limits alone don’t reach.
- **Businesses holding several liability policies.** General liability, auto and employers liability each carry their own limit, and the layer above should list the ones you rely on.

## When to get this coverage

- **A contract sets limits above your primary policy.** Compare the requirement with your current limits before you sign, and price the layer that closes the difference.
- **You’re adding vehicles or drivers.** If you want auto claims to reach the umbrella, confirm your auto or trucking policy is on its underlying schedule at the limit the layer expects.
- **You replaced or changed a primary policy.** A new general liability or auto policy, or a lower limit on one, can leave the umbrella’s schedule out of step with what’s underneath. Line the two up at the same time.
- **Your umbrella is renewing.** Bring the current schedule and any contracts signed since the last renewal, and ask whether employment practices, professional liability or product recall exposures are excluded by name.

## Common questions

Also known as commercial umbrella insurance, business umbrella insurance, umbrella liability insurance, excess liability insurance and excess casualty insurance.

### What’s the difference between umbrella and excess?

Quotes use the two words in different ways, so don’t rely on the label. Spot compares what each proposal lists underneath, when it attaches and whether it adds anything your primary policies don’t.

### Does an umbrella sit over every policy I have?

Only the policies on its underlying schedule, at the limits stated there. Spot checks that each one you rely on is listed.

### When do the extra limits start paying?

That’s set by the attachment terms. A layer may respond once an occurrence limit is used up, once an aggregate is exhausted, or on another basis the quote states.

### Will the umbrella pick up a claim my primary policy excludes?

Not necessarily. Any broader coverage comes from the umbrella’s own terms and exclusions, and a self-insured retention may apply. Spot asks how each form responds before you choose.

### Can the broker who places our primary policies also place the umbrella?

Yes. Spot works with that broker to line up the underlying schedule and take the layer to market, and takes no commissions on premiums. If another broker can place the layer better, you can switch.
