## How it works

- **Send the bond requirement.** Share the contract, license or permit that calls for the bond. Your Spot team finds the exact form and amount it names.
- **Say who the parties are.** We identify you as principal, who the obligee is and what obligation the bond guarantees, so the right kind of bond is requested.
- **Brokers take it to market.** We work with brokers to request the bond from sureties that write it, and follow up on what they need from your business.
- **Check the bond fits the requirement.** Before you accept, compare the proposed bond with the form and amount the obligee requires.

## What you’ll need

- **The bond form and amount required.** The exact form and penal amount named in the contract, license or permit.
- **Who requires it.** The obligee: the customer, city, agency or other party the bond protects.
- **What obligation is guaranteed.** Whether it’s a bid, performance, payment, license or permit obligation.
- **Contract bond or commercial bond.** Contract bonds guarantee a specific contract; commercial bonds address legal or regulatory obligations such as licenses.
- **Your business details.** Your legal name, ownership and what the business does, as the principal on the bond.
- **The contract or project.** For a contract bond, the scope, value and timeline of the work.
- **Your financial information.** What the surety asks for to decide whether to stand behind your obligation.

## What affects your price

- **Type of bond.** Bid, performance, payment and license bonds are different products with different pricing.
- **Bond amount.** A larger amount generally means a larger premium.
- **Your financial profile.** The surety is guaranteeing your obligation, so your financial strength matters.
- **Your experience.** A record of finishing similar obligations is part of how a surety judges you.
- **Project or obligation.** What you are promising to do, and for how long, shapes the risk.

## Common questions

### Is a surety bond insurance for my own losses?

No. A bond protects the obligee if you don’t meet the bonded obligation. It doesn’t replace your own liability or property insurance.

### What is the difference between performance and payment bonds?

A performance bond guarantees completion of the work. A payment bond concerns suppliers and subcontractors. The contract tells you which the customer needs.

### Is a bond the same as fidelity coverage?

No. Fidelity concerns loss from dishonest acts, while a surety bond guarantees an obligation to another party.

### Do I need a surety broker?

Brokers request bonds from sureties. Spot works with yours or helps you find one, and takes no commissions on premiums.
