# Compare surety bond quotes with Spot

A bond quote has to match what the obligee requires, so Spot checks the form and obligation before you compare anything else.

- Bond type and form matched to the obligee
- Required amount and documents checked
- Keep your broker or switch, with no commissions on premiums

## How it works

- **Send the requirement and the quotes.** Share the bond form, amount and contract or license documents the obligee requires, along with each quote.
- **We match quote to obligation.** Spot checks that each quote is for the bond type your obligee actually wants and not a similar one.
- **Prepare the financials.** Your Spot team helps pull together the financial information a surety evaluates, so each quote rests on the same facts.
- **Choose and bind.** Pick the bond that satisfies the obligee. Your Spot team helps you get bonded and has the bond ready to deliver.

## What to compare

- **Contract or commercial bond.** Contract bonds guarantee a specific contract; commercial bonds address legal or regulatory obligations such as licenses. They are different discussions.
- **Bid, performance or payment.** Each serves a different contract need: the bid, completing the work, and paying suppliers and subcontractors.
- **Required form and amount.** Whether the quote matches the obligee’s stated form and amount.
- **The exact obligation.** What the bond guarantees and to whom, and whether it’s a license, a permit, a bid or a job.
- **Letters of credit and other security.** If a contract permits a letter of credit or a bond, compare them with what the obligee states instead of treating them as interchangeable.
- **What the surety evaluates.** Sureties look at your credit, capacity and character, so each quote depends on the financial information you give.
- **Federal construction requirements.** For a federal project, the solicitation and applicable bonding requirements, checked with the contracting officer.

## Differences to watch for

- **A similar but wrong bond.** A bid bond isn’t a performance bond. Match each quote to the obligee’s named requirement.
- **A bond protects someone else.** It guarantees your obligation to another party and doesn’t insure your own losses.
- **Substitutes the obligee won’t accept.** Check an alternative against the obligee’s stated requirements, not just against another quote.
- **Federal projects.** Confirm the bonding requirements with the contracting officer before arranging performance or payment bonds.

## Common questions

### Who are the principal, the obligee and the surety?

The principal owes the obligation, the obligee is owed it and the surety guarantees it if the principal defaults.

### What do I need to get a surety bond quote?

The obligee’s bond form and amount, your contract or license documents, and financial information for the surety’s evaluation.

### Does Spot work with my broker?

Yes. Spot works with brokers instead of replacing them, and takes no commissions on premiums.

### Does a bond cover my own losses?

No. It guarantees your obligation to the obligee.
