## How Spot helps

1. **Tell us who needs the bond.** Your Spot team identifies who requires the bond, the exact obligation, and whether it’s a license or permit, a bid, performance of a job, payment of subcontractors or another commercial form.
2. **Get your financials ready.** Sureties look at credit, capacity and character. Spot gathers the obligee’s bond form and amount, the contract or license documents and your financial information into one package.
3. **Check each offer against the requirement.** We work with brokers to take your request to market and set what each proposal offers against the obligee’s exact requirement, including the name of whoever required the bond.
4. **Keep bonds on file.** Your Spot team keeps your bonds, forms and renewal dates together, so the next bid or license renewal starts from what you already have.

## Who we help

- **Contractors bidding on public work.** Bid, performance and payment bonds each serve a different part of the contract: the bid, finishing the work and paying suppliers and subcontractors.
- **Subcontractors.** A prime contractor may ask you for bonds, and their paperwork sets the form and amount.
- **Licensed businesses.** A license or permit bond answers a legal or regulatory obligation rather than a specific job.
- **Businesses offered a choice of bond or letter of credit.** Some contracts accept either, and the obligee’s stated requirements decide which one works.

## When to get this coverage

- **You’re bidding on a public project.** Check the solicitation first. For a federal construction project, confirm bonding requirements with the contracting officer before arranging performance or payment bonds.
- **A prime contractor asked for a bond.** Get the required form, amount and obligee name from their paperwork before you request a quote.
- **Your license is up for renewal.** Check whether the licensing authority needs the bond renewed or replaced, and confirm the amount and obligee name.
- **A contract allows a letter of credit or a bond.** Compare both against what the obligee actually requires, rather than assuming they’re interchangeable.
- **Your financials changed.** A surety evaluates credit, capacity and character, so update the information before you apply.

## Common questions

Also known as contractor bonds, performance bonds, bid bonds, license and permit bonds and commercial surety bonds.

### Can my surety broker stay on the account?

Yes. Spot prepares the financial package and works with your surety broker on each bond request, and takes no commissions on premiums. You can also move to a broker with deeper surety relationships.

### Is a surety bond insurance?

No. It protects the customer or other obligee if you don’t meet the bonded obligation. It isn’t a substitute for your own liability or property insurance.

### What’s the difference between contract and commercial bonds?

Contract bonds, such as bid and performance bonds, guarantee a specific contract will be fulfilled. Commercial bonds, such as license and permit bonds, address legal or regulatory obligations. Match the bond to the obligation.

### Can one bond cover both a job and a license?

No. A license bond and a contract performance bond answer different obligations, so don’t treat one as satisfying the other.

### What does the surety look at?

Sureties evaluate your credit, capacity and character. Prepare financial information and a description of the work or license to be bonded.
