## How Spot helps

1. **Describe how you serve.** Your Spot team collects your locations, establishment type, hours, food and alcohol sales and license details, plus how you train servers, check ages and staff security.
2. **See how much each quote pays per incident.** One overserved patron can lead to claims from several people. When the proposals come back from market, we show how each proposal groups those claims, its each-common-cause and aggregate limits, and whether defense costs use up the limit.
3. **Check an off-site event before you agree.** Send the event details or venue agreement. Spot checks whether the location, the catering work and any bring-your-own arrangement fit your policy, and flags what needs adding.
4. **Get certificates for venues and organizers.** A venue or event organizer may want a certificate before your team sets up the bar. Post the request in your shared Slack channel, and your Spot team checks what the venue asks for and gets the certificate ready.

## Who we help

- **Bars and taverns.** Selling drinks is the business, so hours, entertainment, door security and how staff handle overservice all shape the quote.
- **Restaurants that serve alcohol.** Drinks come with the meal, and the insurer wants to see how your food and alcohol sales compare.
- **Caterers and mobile bars.** You pour at venues you don’t own, so off-site events have to be on the policy before you rely on it.
- **Businesses that host occasional events.** A launch party or client dinner is a different exposure from running a bar, and the broker needs to know which one you have.
- **Venues that allow guests to bring their own.** A bring-your-own-alcohol arrangement belongs on the application, not discovered after a claim.

## When to get this coverage

- **You’re opening a bar or restaurant.** Line up alcohol-service coverage alongside your general liability before the first drink is poured, with your license details ready for the application.
- **You’ve booked a catering job away from your premises.** Your policy may only list your usual locations. Confirm the event is included before you agree to pour.
- **You’re adding live music or later hours.** Entertainment, opening hours and security staffing are part of how insurers see a venue. Update your description so the quote matches the night you actually run.
- **You had an incident last year.** Gather what happened, any claims that followed and what you changed afterward. Insurers ask, and the steps you took are part of the answer.
- **Your license status changed.** A missing, suspended or restricted license can run into a license-related exclusion. Check how your policy treats it before you keep serving.

## Common questions

Also known as dram shop insurance, liquor insurance, alcohol liability insurance and host liquor liability insurance.

### Doesn’t my general liability policy cover drinks?

Don’t assume it does. Alcohol-service liability, which state dram shop laws can create, is compared separately from general liability for your premises and other operations, and Spot checks how each proposal splits the two.

### We only host a holiday party. Do we need what a bar needs?

No. Occasional hosting, often addressed as host liquor liability, and being in the business of serving alcohol are different exposures. Tell us which one you have and we’ll describe it that way to the broker.

### Are fights at the bar covered?

Don’t assume so. Spot asks how each quote treats assault-and-battery allegations and related security failures, and shows you the wording.

### Do defense costs come out of my limit?

Policies differ on this. Spot checks who defends you, whether defense costs reduce the limit and when the insurer’s duty to defend ends.

### How quickly do I have to report an incident?

Your policy sets the timing. Ask the Spot agent and it points you to the reporting condition in your wording.

### Can Spot work with the broker who writes our restaurant package?

Yes. Spot works with that broker on the liquor liability piece and takes no commissions on premiums. If a different broker suits your venue better, we help you switch.
