## How it works

- **Share how your team drives.** Tell your Spot team how many employees drive for work, why, how often and what you rent, and send the proposals you have.
- **We check the order of payment.** Spot compares how each quote works with drivers’ personal insurance and rental coverage, and who is protected at each point.
- **Ask about limits and claims.** Your Spot team explains each quote’s liability limit, its defense terms and how one accident with several claimants uses the limit.
- **Choose and bind.** Pick the quote that fits your team’s driving. Your Spot team helps you bind it and files the policy with your other coverage.

## What to compare

- **Which policy pays first.** How the quote sits beside the driver’s personal auto policy or the rental company’s coverage, and where your protection begins.
- **Whose liability is protected.** Protection for the company doesn’t automatically extend to the employee behind the wheel.
- **Liability limit.** The amount available, and how it applies when one accident leads to several claims.
- **Defense terms.** How the insurer defends claims against your business, and whether defense uses the limit.
- **Hired and non-owned.** Whether the quote reaches both vehicles you rent and employees’ own cars used for business.
- **Property being carried.** Goods in the vehicle and damage to property in your care are separate questions to put to each quote.
- **A vehicle you buy.** When the business buys a vehicle, commercial auto applies instead of this coverage.

## Differences to watch for

- **No protection for the vehicle itself.** This coverage addresses liability. It doesn’t pay for damage to the rented or employee-owned car.
- **The company covered, the employee not.** A quote can protect your business and leave the person driving without the same protection.
- **A purchased vehicle.** Once the business owns a vehicle, it should be treated under commercial auto, not as a hired or non-owned one.
- **Driver checks.** Insurers may ask how you check driving records and confirm employees’ personal auto insurance. Have your answers ready.

## Common questions

### Do I need this if I have no company cars?

If employees drive for work or you rent vehicles, it’s worth comparing. Spot checks each quote against your actual driving.

### Does this cover damage to a rental car?

No. It addresses liability, not damage to the hired or employee-owned vehicle.

### Do I have to change brokers to compare quotes?

No. Spot doesn’t replace brokers or earn commissions on premiums, so your broker relationship is yours to keep or change.

### When do I need commercial auto instead?

When the business owns the vehicle. Spot can take both to market so you can compare.
