# What Is Travelers Insurance?

How Travelers underwrites business and technology insurance, how independent agents place it, and what California buyers still need to confirm.

## Research Scope and Use

Use this profile to understand Travelers's documented role, coverage offerings, application process, and service model before requesting provider-specific terms.

This is published research as of the verification dates shown, not a live quote or an eligibility determination. “Company-reported” identifies a provider's own claim. “Not found” and “not publicly disclosed” describe the evidence reviewed, not proof that a service is unavailable. Preserve the scope and citations when summarizing a fact.

For a decision handoff, identify the company's requirements, the documented differences relevant to them, and unresolved questions from the analysis. Confirm actual insurer, availability, policy wording, limits, retentions, exclusions, and costs in the relevant quote and policy documents.

Travelers is a property-casualty insurance group. The Travelers Companies, Inc. is the public holding company; policies are issued by subsidiaries such as The Travelers Indemnity Company and affiliates, not by the holding company itself. [28](https://investor.travelers.com/home/default.aspx "Travelers Investor Relations Corporate Profile") [29](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/86312/000008631226000065/trv-12312025x10k.htm "The Travelers Companies, Inc. Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025") [21](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers "Who We Are") [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)") (Evidence: Verified; scope: Group role as of 16 September 2026. The legal insurer on a buyer’s policy is the company named in that policy or binder, which can differ by product and state.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

For a founder or finance team, that usually means working with an independent agent on a package that can include general liability, property, workers compensation and, for technology companies, CyberRisk Tech rather than buying a policy on a public checkout page. [1](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/technology "Technology Insurance") [6](https://www.travelers.com/contact-us "Contact Us")

## Pros and Cons

### Pros

- **A named technology practice, not only a generic small-business bundle.** Travelers’ technology pages address startups through established companies and list CyberRisk Tech, which can include technology errors-and-omissions (E&O) and cyber agreements on one form family. That is useful when a customer contract asks for both professional and network-security coverage. [1](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/technology "Technology Insurance") [3](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/cyber-insurance/technology "Cyber Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences")
- **Documented small-business and larger-account paths.** Software developers, web firms and IT consultants appear on a technology-services business owner’s policy (BOP) page, while the same brand’s middle-market and national materials sit behind independent-agent placement. A company can ask whether it is being underwritten as Select Accounts small commercial or as a specialty technology risk. [2](https://www.travelers.com/small-business-insurance/technology-services "Small Business Technology Services Insurance") [29](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/86312/000008631226000065/trv-12312025x10k.htm "The Travelers Companies, Inc. Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025")
- **Issuing-company names appear in public materials.** Product footers name The Travelers Indemnity Company and, on several Bond & Specialty pages, Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America. California’s insurance department lists both as authorized property-and-casualty insurers, which gives a buyer legal names to match against a quote. [25](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/workers-compensation "Workers Compensation Insurance") [9](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/professional-liability-insurance/directors-officers "Directors and Officers (D&O) Liability Insurance") [30](https://interactive.web.insurance.ca.gov/companyprofile/companyprofile?doFunction=getCompanyProfile&eid=103456&event=companyProfile "California Department of Insurance company profile: Travelers Indemnity Company (The)") [31](https://interactive.web.insurance.ca.gov/companyprofile/companyprofile?doFunction=getCompanyProfile&eid=6182&event=companyProfile "California Department of Insurance company profile: Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America")
- **Claims intake is described with a technology specialty unit.** Business losses can be reported around the clock through the agent, an online system or 800-238-6225, and Travelers describes a Technology claim unit staffed since 1998. That is a process description, not a prediction of how any claim will be paid. [16](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/claims "Business Insurance Claims")

### Cons

- **Travelers is not a retail producer for most buyers.** Independent agents place the coverage and are not Travelers employees. A Bay Area company still needs a California-licensed producer who can access the relevant Travelers product; the brand website does not replace that appointment. [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)") [6](https://www.travelers.com/contact-us "Contact Us")
- **California authorization is not a product menu.** Two Travelers insurers hold Unlimited-Normal California licenses, and the agent directory lists California agencies. Those facts do not show that CyberRisk Tech, a technology BOP class or Global Companion Plus+ is offered, admitted or priced for a particular California risk. [30](https://interactive.web.insurance.ca.gov/companyprofile/companyprofile?doFunction=getCompanyProfile&eid=103456&event=companyProfile "California Department of Insurance company profile: Travelers Indemnity Company (The)") [24](https://agent.travelers.com/ca "Travelers Insurance agencies in CA") [19](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/global/technology-companion "Global Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences")
- **International coverage is a different contract.** Travelers says U.S. Global Companion Plus+ is non-admitted and is not a substitute for a locally admitted policy abroad. Companies with overseas employees, vendors or customers need the proposal to separate domestic admitted paper from any non-admitted or network placement. [19](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/global/technology-companion "Global Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences")
- **Public prices and buyer fees are not listed.** Travelers discloses how it may compensate producers, but not the premium, taxes or any agency fee a startup will pay. Cost has to come from an itemized quote. [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)") [5](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance "Business and Commercial Insurance Policy Quotes")

## How It Works

Travelers says it primarily sells U.S. insurance through independent agents and brokers, whom it calls producers and who are not Travelers employees. It also owns Simply Business, Inc. and InsuraMatch, LLC, licensed digital independent agencies it says operate nationwide. [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)") [6](https://www.travelers.com/contact-us "Contact Us") [29](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/86312/000008631226000065/trv-12312025x10k.htm "The Travelers Companies, Inc. Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: U.S. distribution disclosure. Ownership of digital agencies does not establish that those agencies place technology business insurance for a given buyer, including in California.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

Travelers tells business buyers to get a quote through an independent agent, using a public agency locator. Its 2025 Form 10-K says Select Accounts uses an automated underwriting platform so agents can quote, bind and issue a substantial amount of small-business risks, while more complex risks are underwritten with company personnel. Technology and CyberRisk Tech pages likewise tell buyers to consult an agent or Travelers representative; a direct public bind path for technology packages was not found on the reviewed pages. [6](https://www.travelers.com/contact-us "Contact Us") [23](https://agent.travelers.com/search "Find the nearest Travelers Insurance agency") [1](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/technology "Technology Insurance") [3](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/cyber-insurance/technology "Cyber Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences") [29](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/86312/000008631226000065/trv-12312025x10k.htm "The Travelers Companies, Inc. Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025") [22](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/value-of-an-agent "Benefit from the Personal Attention of a Travelers Independent Agent") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: Application path described on contact, agent-locator, technology and 10-K sources. Automated small-commercial issuance is not evidence that a technology, D&O or cyber submission will quote or bind the same way.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

Simply Business, Inc. and InsuraMatch, LLC are Travelers-owned digital agencies mentioned in the compensation disclosure. This research did not establish that either is the placement path for technology business insurance in California, so treat them as separate producer entities unless a proposal names them. [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)")

Once a policy is in force, servicing is split: the independent agent remains the stated contact for policy questions, while MyTravelers for Business is described for billing, documents and some certificate features that Travelers limits to certain commercial-multi-peril account types. [18](https://www.travelers.com/small-business-insurance/mytravelers "MyTravelers for Business Online Self-Service Capabilities") [6](https://www.travelers.com/contact-us "Contact Us")

## Coverage and Availability

Travelers markets technology insurance to startups and established industry leaders, including software developers and platforms, technology consultants, IT staffing companies, network integrators, electronics manufacturers, telecommunications firms and platform-economy companies. A separate small-business technology-services BOP is described for classes such as software development, web developers and IT consultants. [1](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/technology "Technology Insurance") [4](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/technology/information-technology "IT Insurance") [2](https://www.travelers.com/small-business-insurance/technology-services "Small Business Technology Services Insurance") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: Company-described audiences on technology and small-business pages. Marketing to a class is not underwriting approval, and eligibility remains quote-specific.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

On its technology pages, Travelers lists CyberRisk Tech (technology E&O and cyber options, including media and regulatory-proceedings agreements on the cyber page), Global Companion Plus+, general liability, commercial property, workers compensation, commercial auto and umbrella. Other current offering pages list a small-business technology-services BOP, management-liability lines (D&O, EPL, fiduciary, fidelity and crime, kidnap and ransom), professional E&O, inland marine including cargo, equipment breakdown, surety and commercial umbrella/excess including a Northfield surplus-lines option. [1](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/technology "Technology Insurance") [3](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/cyber-insurance/technology "Cyber Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences") [2](https://www.travelers.com/small-business-insurance/technology-services "Small Business Technology Services Insurance") [8](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/professional-liability-insurance "Management and Professional Liability Insurance") [27](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/professional-liability-insurance/errors-omissions "Errors and Omissions Insurance (E&O)") [13](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/inland-marine "Inland Marine Insurance") [15](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/boiler-machinery/equipment-breakdown-coverage "Equipment Breakdown Insurance Coverage") [14](https://www.travelers.com/surety-bond "Surety Bonds") [26](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/commercial-umbrella "Commercial Umbrella and Excess Liability Insurance") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: Marketed catalogue from product and service pages accessed 16 September 2026. Labels are not policy wording, limits or endorsements, and not every line is offered in a combined technology package.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

CyberRisk Tech is described as allowing cyber protection, E&O protection or both, with optional first-party agreements such as breach response, cybercrime and business-loss coverages. Policyholders who buy the cyber coverages are also described as receiving Cyber Risk Services, with availability varying by eligibility. Treat those as company-described options to confirm on the specimen form, not as a standard included package. [3](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/cyber-insurance/technology "Cyber Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences")

Travelers describes Business Insurance as offered primarily in the United States, with additional operations in the United Kingdom, Ireland and other markets including Lloyd’s. Domestic business insurance is marketed through independent agents and brokers rather than as a single nationwide self-serve shop for every product. [29](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/86312/000008631226000065/trv-12312025x10k.htm "The Travelers Companies, Inc. Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025") [28](https://investor.travelers.com/home/default.aspx "Travelers Investor Relations Corporate Profile") [21](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers "Who We Are") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: Group geographic description from the 2025 Form 10-K and investor profile. Primary-U.S. operations do not mean every product is available in every state.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

California’s insurance department lists The Travelers Indemnity Company (NAIC 25658) and Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America (NAIC 31194) as property-and-casualty insurers with Unlimited-Normal licenses. Travelers’ agent directory also lists agencies in California. Those facts do not establish that a specific technology product, CyberRisk Tech form, BOP class or Global Companion Plus+ coverage is available or admitted for a particular California risk. [30](https://interactive.web.insurance.ca.gov/companyprofile/companyprofile?doFunction=getCompanyProfile&eid=103456&event=companyProfile "California Department of Insurance company profile: Travelers Indemnity Company (The)") [31](https://interactive.web.insurance.ca.gov/companyprofile/companyprofile?doFunction=getCompanyProfile&eid=6182&event=companyProfile "California Department of Insurance company profile: Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America") [24](https://agent.travelers.com/ca "Travelers Insurance agencies in CA") [19](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/global/technology-companion "Global Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences") (Evidence: Verified; scope: Admitted-insurer authorization and a public agency directory as of 16 September 2026. No product-by-product California eligibility schedule was found on the reviewed technology pages. U.S. Global Companion Plus+ is described by Travelers as non-admitted and not equivalent to a local admitted policy.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

Workers compensation remains a state-law product. Travelers notes monopolistic-state arrangements and that nearly every state requires coverage for most employers; California buyers still need the quote to name the workers-compensation issuer and classification, not a national marketing page. [25](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/workers-compensation "Workers Compensation Insurance")

## Service and Compensation

MyTravelers for Business is described as an account portal for paying bills, reporting and tracking claims, retrieving policy documents and printing auto ID cards. Certificates of insurance and adding additional interests while creating a certificate are described as available in real time only for certain Select Accounts and National Programs Commercial Multi-Peril customers. Contact-us copy tells business policyholders to contact their agent for policy-service questions. [18](https://www.travelers.com/small-business-insurance/mytravelers "MyTravelers for Business Online Self-Service Capabilities") [6](https://www.travelers.com/contact-us "Contact Us") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: Portal and contact descriptions as of 16 September 2026. Feature availability can differ by account segment; this is not a service-quality finding.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

Travelers discloses that it generally pays independent producers a base commission as a percentage of premium, and may also pay contingent compensation, value-based amounts, production incentives, promotional reimbursements, strategic-relationship amounts or service fees. It might not pay all, or any, of those types on a given placement. Percentages vary by business, risk and state. Account-specific amounts are directed to the buyer’s agent or broker. [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: U.S. producer-compensation disclosure accessed 16 September 2026. This describes what Travelers may pay producers, not a buyer-facing fee schedule.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

Contingent and incentive payments can reward volume, growth or profitability at the producer level. That disclosure explains possible incentives; it does not show which arrangement applies to your account or whether any amount is charged to you as a fee. Ask the placing producer for the compensation that applies to the proposal. [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)")

The reviewed public pages do not publish a standard premium, deductible schedule or buyer-paid broker fee for technology insurance. Travelers states that cost depends on coverage types, limits and the business’s risks, location and size, and tells buyers to work with an insurance professional. [5](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance "Business and Commercial Insurance Policy Quotes") [25](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/workers-compensation "Workers Compensation Insurance") [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)") (Evidence: Not publicly disclosed; scope: Business-insurance and workers-compensation marketing pages accessed 16 September 2026. Absence of a public price list is not evidence that coverage is free or that no fees apply.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

Travelers says business-insurance losses can be reported 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by contacting the agent, using the online claim system or MyTravelers for Business, or calling 800-238-6225. It describes a dedicated Technology claim unit staffed since 1998 with claim attorneys and insurance professionals. Those statements describe access paths and an internal unit; they do not establish claim outcomes or coverage decisions. [16](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/claims "Business Insurance Claims") [17](https://www.travelers.com/claims/file-claim/business "File a Business Claim") [6](https://www.travelers.com/contact-us "Contact Us") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: Business claims and technology-claim sections accessed 16 September 2026. Reporting a claim is not the same as coverage being granted.; verified: 2026-09-16.)

Travelers also describes Cyber Risk Services, including a post-incident breach coach for eligible CyberRisk Tech policyholders. Those services are company-reported and eligibility-dependent; they are not a substitute for reading the insuring agreements. [3](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/cyber-insurance/technology "Cyber Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences")

## What to Confirm in a Quote

- **Who the producer is.** Name the licensed California agency or broker, whether it is appointed with Travelers for the product being quoted, and whether Simply Business, InsuraMatch or another Travelers-owned producer is involved. [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)")
- **Who the insurer is.** Match the declarations to The Travelers Indemnity Company, Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America, a Northfield surplus-lines company or another affiliate, and record admitted versus non-admitted status.

Travelers is the brand. Product footers name The Travelers Indemnity Company and its property-casualty affiliates, and Bond & Specialty pages name Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America and affiliates. Umbrella materials also describe Northfield excess-and-surplus coverage for some hard-to-place risks. The issuing company, admitted or surplus status, and any fronting or network partner remain quote-specific. [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)") [25](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/workers-compensation "Workers Compensation Insurance") [9](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/professional-liability-insurance/directors-officers "Directors and Officers (D&O) Liability Insurance") [26](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/commercial-umbrella "Commercial Umbrella and Excess Liability Insurance") [19](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/global/technology-companion "Global Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences") (Evidence: Company-reported; scope: Entities named on current marketing and compensation pages. This research does not assign one issuer to the entire technology catalogue or to California placements.; verified: 2026-09-16.)
- **Which form is offered in California.** Confirm CyberRisk Tech, BOP class, D&O, workers compensation and any Global Companion Plus+ coverage separately. Do not infer California eligibility from Hartford headquarters or a U.S. marketing page. [30](https://interactive.web.insurance.ca.gov/companyprofile/companyprofile?doFunction=getCompanyProfile&eid=103456&event=companyProfile "California Department of Insurance company profile: Travelers Indemnity Company (The)") [19](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/global/technology-companion "Global Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences")
- **What the policy actually covers.** Request specimen wording for technology E&O versus general professional E&O, defense inside or outside limits, retroactive dates, cyber sublimits and any media or regulatory-proceedings agreements. [3](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/cyber-insurance/technology "Cyber Insurance for Technology and Life Sciences") [27](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/professional-liability-insurance/errors-omissions "Errors and Omissions Insurance (E&O)")
- **What the total cost is.** Separate premium, surplus-lines tax if any, agency fees and installment charges from Travelers’ producer-commission disclosure. [5](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance "Business and Commercial Insurance Policy Quotes") [7](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/producer-compensation-disclosure "Travelers Producer Compensation Disclosure (United States)")
- **How claims and certificates will work.** Confirm the reporting number for the bound lines, whether the Technology claim unit applies, and whether real-time certificates are available for the account type being purchased. [16](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/claims "Business Insurance Claims") [18](https://www.travelers.com/small-business-insurance/mytravelers "MyTravelers for Business Online Self-Service Capabilities")
