## Customer-Submitted Reviews and Complaints

Trustpilot displayed a 2.5/5 TrustScore from five reviews when inspected, and its page said Markel had not invited customers to review, so the sample may not be representative. BBB's Markel Insurance Company complaints page showed 12 complaints in the prior three years and three closed in the prior 12 months. Its displayed complaint categories included billing, customer service, order and product issues. Individual cases include complaints about workers-compensation audits and billing, alongside company replies; BBB's statuses distinguish an answered business response from a complainant-confirmed resolution. ## Industry Studies

J.D. Power's 2022 U.S. Independent Agent Satisfaction Study listed Markel at 726 on a 1,000-point commercial-lines insurer scale. The respondent population was independent agents, so this is a source-specific intermediary satisfaction measure rather than an average among insured businesses. The 2025 U.S. Small Commercial Insurance Study surveyed 2,848 customers at businesses with 50 or fewer employees. ## Regulatory Complaint Data

The NAIC Consumer Insurance Search explains that insurers may have different subsidiary names and offers company-specific complaint-index reports. The current search result view did not establish a usable Markel entity-and-line result, so this review does not report an NAIC index or infer that no complaints exist. A BBB letter grade describes BBB’s view of a business; customer star ratings are a separate measure. An NAIC complaint index compares complaint volume with expected volume for a company’s size and is not a customer rating.
