## How Spot helps

1. **Describe every trade and jobsite.** Your Spot team lists each trade, jobsite, project phase, crew duty, work state and subcontractor arrangement, so classifications and completed operations match the work you do.
2. **Read the contract’s insurance section.** Send the subcontract or owner agreement. Spot compares its limits and endorsement wording with your policies and flags what needs to change before you sign.
3. **Get a certificate for every GC.** When a general contractor or owner wants a certificate naming them before you mobilize, post their requirements in your shared Slack channel. Your Spot team checks the endorsement wording against your policy and gets the certificate ready.
4. **Compare insurance and bond proposals.** We work with brokers and sureties to take your submission to market, then line up liability, workers’ compensation and bond terms so you can see what each one actually provides.

## Who we help

- **Licensed contractors.** In California, an active license needs a contractor license bond and proof of workers’ compensation or a valid exemption.
- **Subcontractors.** The general contractor’s agreement sets limits and endorsement wording you must show before you start.
- **General contractors and builders.** You and the owner need to agree who insures the structure, materials and work in progress at each phase.
- **Specialty trades.** Work at height, excavation or certain license classifications change what you must describe and carry.

## When to get this coverage

- **You’re getting a California contractor’s license.** Confirm the contractor license bond and the workers’ compensation proof or exemption for your classification. Some classifications must carry it even without employees.
- **A GC wants to be an additional insured.** Compare the exact endorsement wording they request with your policy forms, not only the limit.
- **An owner asks for a project bond.** Find out which bid, performance or payment bond they expect. It’s separate from your license bond and from your insurance.
- **A build or renovation is starting.** List who is responsible for the existing structure, work in progress, materials and installed work at each phase.
- **Your tools travel between jobs.** Ask which equipment, storage locations and transit legs the inland marine schedule lists.

## Common questions

Also known as contractor insurance, contractors insurance, general contractor insurance, subcontractor insurance, construction company insurance and construction business insurance.

### What does contractor insurance usually include?

Most general contractors and subcontractors carry general liability and workers’ compensation, often with surety bonds, builders’ risk, inland marine for tools and equipment, and property. Spot checks the general contractor’s or owner’s requirements against each one.

### Does a California license bond replace a project bond?

No. The license bond is a licensing requirement. Project bonds cover job completion or payment. Both are surety bonds, and neither is insurance.

### Do we need workers’ compensation if we have no employees?

It depends on your license classification. In California some classifications must carry it regardless, while others can file an exemption. Spot checks your classification against the current CSLB filing rules before you file proof or an exemption.

### Do OSHA hazard guides tell us what insurance covers?

No. They help you describe fall or trenching work accurately, but the policy wording decides what’s covered.

### Who insures materials on site before the job is done?

That depends on the contract and the builders’ risk form. Your Spot team asks the broker and project parties to identify the form, dates, valuation and exclusions.

### We’ve used the same agent for our bonds and liability for years. Can we keep them?

Yes. Spot works alongside your agent or broker on both the bond and insurance side, and takes no commissions on premiums. If your trade needs more markets than they reach, Spot can help you switch.
