# What Insurance Covers Theft by Customers?

Commercial property or crime insurance may cover customer theft of inventory or money when the relevant theft grant applies.

Shoplifting, robbery, and employee theft can fall under different policy grants. The California Department of Insurance explains that property coverage can address property stolen by a covered peril and that crime coverage may protect business merchandise and money.

Ask which grant covers customer shoplifting or larceny, and check the location, deductible, security conditions, and proof needed. Employee dishonesty coverage applies to a different source of loss and does not automatically cover customer theft.
