Yes, HNOA may cover the business’s liability when employees use personal cars for work. It generally does not insure the employee’s car for collision or other physical damage. The Insurance Information Institute discusses separate coverage for employees driving personal vehicles, and California guidance lists non-owned autos as a possible Business Auto Policy category. The endorsement must define eligible drivers and business use.

An employee’s own auto policy is usually the primary place to check for coverage on that vehicle, but its terms and permission for business use still matter. HNOA does not necessarily name the employee as an insured for all purposes, pay their collision loss, or cover a commute unrelated to company business.

Review the HNOA endorsement for “who is an insured,” covered autos, and exceptions. Confirm employees’ driving records and business-use status are disclosed, and ask whether regular use, household vehicles, delivery, or transporting clients is restricted.
