NAIC describes comprehensive auto coverage as applying to non-collision events such as theft or weather damage to the insured vehicle; that does not mean it pays for stolen tools.

California’s commercial guide identifies inland marine as a specialized property line that can cover business property while in transport, including contractors’ equipment floaters. Whether tools are insured away from the premises depends on the chosen form, covered property, territory, limits, and exclusions.

Review the commercial auto quote separately from any inland marine or business property schedule. Ask whether tools are covered in an unattended vehicle, overnight, during loading, and at job sites; check theft conditions, per-item limits, deductibles, and proof-of-value requirements.
