# Does Commercial Auto Insurance Cover Commuting?

Tell the insurer about commuting, home garaging, and personal use, then confirm covered drivers and exclusions.

Sometimes. Commercial auto may cover commuting in a company vehicle if the policy permits the driver and use; personal errands or take-home arrangements may be treated differently. Personal policies may permit commuting, but company-owned vehicles used privately can have different eligibility and rating rules. “Business use” is not a single universal category.

An illustrative ISO form can extend liability to permissive users of a covered auto, but that does not settle whether an employee is allowed to take the vehicle home, whether personal use is excluded, or how an accident on the commute is handled. Workers’ compensation questions about an employee’s commute are also separate from auto liability.

Tell the agent about regular home garaging, commuting distance, personal errands, and take-home vehicle arrangements. Ask which drivers and uses are covered, whether a permissive-use or employee-use endorsement applies, and whether any commute or personal-use exclusion appears in the policy.
