# Can You Get Builders Risk After Construction Starts?

Sometimes. An insurer may consider builders risk after construction starts, but acceptance depends on the project stage and prior losses; US Assure requires added review above 30% complete for its program. US Assure says submissions above 30 percent complete require additional underwriting review for its program. That is a program-specific threshold, not proof that another insurer will accept or reject the same project.

If the insurer agrees to cover the remaining work, the bound effective date controls when protection begins. Do not expect a new policy to pay for damage that happened before it took effect. The specimen ISO form ties coverage to the policy period and the construction project shown in its declarations.

Provide the start date, work completed, current value at risk, site conditions, prior losses, and remaining schedule. Ask whether any waiting period, inspection, protective safeguard, valuation condition, or limitation applies, and obtain confirmation that the project as it stands is eligible before relying on the quote.
