# Insurance Buying Guide for Industrial Businesses

[Industries](https://spot.insure/industries)

For a hardware business, map who could be injured and what property could be damaged at each stage: prototypes in a workshop, machinery and stock at the site, equipment carried to pilots, and products in customers’ hands. Ask the broker to match the quote to those operations and scheduled property; coverage depends on the policy terms, exclusions, valuation, and locations. ## Which Insurance Should You Consider?

Consider general liability, commercial property, equipment breakdown, tools, equipment and inland marine, workers’ compensation, and product liability. Start with the coverages tied to your day-to-day operations, then use the situations and buying questions below to compare your options.

### [General liability](https://spot.insure/coverage/general-liability)

**When it matters:** You invite customers, investors, contractors, or other visitors into a workshop, or your team performs work at a customer or pilot site. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**What to review:** Commercial general liability (CGL) can address accidental bodily injury or property damage arising from your premises and operations. Check exclusions for activities such as aircraft use, pollution, and damage to your own work. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**Ask:** Which workshop, pilot-site, demonstration, and installation activities are described in the application, and what exclusions or sublimits affect them? [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

### [Commercial property](https://spot.insure/coverage/commercial-property)

**When it matters:** You lease or own a workshop, keep prototypes or inventory on site, or install valuable machinery in the space. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**What to review:** Check which building interests, installed machinery, movable business property, and property belonging to others the quote insures. Covered causes of loss, valuation, deductibles, and coinsurance affect what a claim pays. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**Ask:** Are the building interest, installed machinery, movable tools, prototypes, inventory, and any customer-owned property scheduled with the correct values, locations, valuation basis, covered causes, and deductibles? [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

### [Equipment breakdown](https://spot.insure/coverage/equipment-breakdown)

**When it matters:** A machine, test rig, or production system is important enough that a mechanical or electrical malfunction could interrupt your work. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**What to review:** Equipment breakdown addresses specified machinery malfunctions that a commercial property form may exclude. Check the covered equipment, causes of breakdown, and terms for resulting income loss or extra expense. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**Ask:** Which named machines and breakdown causes are covered, and does the quote address resulting property damage, temporary equipment, business income, or extra expense? [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

### [Tools, equipment and inland marine](https://spot.insure/coverage/inland-marine)

**When it matters:** You move prototypes, tools, test equipment, or components between your workshop, customer sites, trade shows, or pilots. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**What to review:** Inland marine can insure business property away from a fixed site or in transit. Equipment floaters, installation floaters, and trip-transit forms serve different purposes; check the scheduled items and covered stages of each trip. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**Ask:** Which property, values, carriers, destinations, loading and installation stages, and causes of loss are covered while items leave the scheduled site? [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

### [Workers’ compensation](https://spot.insure/coverage/workers-compensation)

**When it matters:** You hire employees who will build, test, install, repair, or maintain hardware. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**What to review:** Workers compensation provides benefits for work-related injury or illness under the applicable state law. California generally requires employers to provide it; check requirements wherever your employees work and review the separate employers-liability terms. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**Ask:** Which states and employee duties are listed, how are worker classifications determined, and what employers-liability limits and exclusions apply? [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

### [Product liability](https://spot.insure/coverage/product-liability)

**When it matters:** You ship a prototype, sell a product, or complete an installation that could later cause bodily injury or damage to someone else’s property. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**What to review:** CGL products-liability and completed-operations terms can address bodily injury or property damage arising from goods or finished work. Check exclusions and aggregate limits; do not assume this pays for repairing your own product, recalls, or warranty promises. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

**Ask:** Does the form cover your specific products, software or hardware combinations, completed installations, and sales territories, and is any recall expense insured by a separate form? [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

## Need Help Choosing Coverage?

Spot prepares your applications, coordinates with brokers, and helps you compare quotes so you can choose coverage with the key details in front of you.

[Book a Free Consultation](https://cal.com/team/spotinsure/insurance-consultation)

## Before You Open a Workshop

Make an inventory before you sign a lease or request a quote. Separate the building and installed equipment from movable tools, prototypes, stock, and anything owned by a customer or another company. Check which of these property interests the policy lists. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

Give the broker current values and ask how the quote values property after a loss. Replacement cost, actual cash value, covered perils, deductibles, and coinsurance can change what a property claim pays. Ask which property and causes of loss the proposed form actually includes. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

## When a Pilot Becomes a Product

Update the operations description when a team moves from bench prototypes to customer demonstrations, field installation, or shipped products. CGL distinguishes premises, ongoing operations, products, and completed work, and it lists exclusions such as automobile, aircraft, pollution, and damage to your work. Ask how the actual activity and product are treated rather than assuming a general liability limit answers every question. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

If tools or prototypes travel to a pilot, ask whether the quote includes an appropriate inland-marine form and which property and trips it covers. If a production machine fails, ask whether equipment-breakdown terms apply and whether they address resulting income or extra expense. Neither line name alone establishes those terms. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

## Review the Quote Against Your Operations

Send the broker one clear description of each entity’s work, sites, employees, machinery, stock, customer property, products, and installation or transit activity. Compare the proposed limits, classifications, exclusions, and endorsements against that description. Ask the broker to show where each important activity appears in the quote and policy documents. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

List any hazardous waste generated by your process, including types and monthly quantities, before asking about environmental coverage. Check which federal and state waste rules apply. Standard CGL exclusions can restrict pollution coverage, so ask the broker to identify the relevant forms and exclusions. [Hazardous Waste Generator Regulatory Summary](https://www.epa.gov/hwgenerators/hazardous-waste-generator-regulatory-summary), [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

## Common Questions

### Does general liability cover a product after you ship it?

A CGL policy can include products-liability and completed-operations terms for bodily injury or property damage arising from goods or finished work. Your declared products, exclusions, and aggregate limits determine the scope to check before shipping. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)

[Read the full answer](https://spot.insure/industries/industrials/does-general-liability-cover-products)
### Will property insurance cover a machine breakdown or equipment you take to a pilot?

Not necessarily. Commercial property forms may exclude machinery breakdown, and coverage at a scheduled workshop does not establish protection during a trip. Compare equipment-breakdown and inland-marine terms with the machine and movement you need to insure. [Commercial Insurance Guide](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/09-comm/commercialguide.cfm)
