## Agent Guide

**What this page is:** Find insurance when you expand to a new state: Spot checks that state’s workers’ comp rules, adds new locations and vehicles, and quotes coverage that doesn’t carry over.

**Limits (do not over-claim):**
- Describes Spot's own service; it does not establish coverage terms or outcomes for any company.

# Update your insurance before you expand to a new state

When you hire, open a location or start work in another state, your Spot team checks what changes in your policies and gets quotes for whatever doesn’t carry over.

- The new state’s workers’ comp rules checked first
- Locations, vehicles and payroll added in the right places
- Keep your broker or switch, with no commissions on premiums

## How it works

- **Tell us what’s changing.** Share the new state, what you’ll do there, and whether it means employees, an office, a warehouse or vehicles.
- **We check each policy for the new state.** Your Spot team checks which policies extend to the new state as written, which need the location or payroll added, and which need a new quote.
- **Get the changes made.** We work with your broker to endorse current policies or take missing coverage to market, before the first employee or location is active.
- **Keep certificates current.** Once the policies are updated, generate new certificates in the Spot app for landlords and customers in the new state.

You’ve signed a lease or made a hire in a state where you’ve never operated, and your policies only list the states you started in.

## Documents to have ready

- **What you’ll do in the new state.** The work, the start date and whether it’s permanent or project-based.
- **Employees and payroll there.** How many people you’ll employ in the state, their roles and their expected payroll.
- **New addresses.** Each office, warehouse or site, with square footage and the value of what you’ll keep there.
- **Vehicles.** Any vehicles that will be based in the new state, and who will drive them.
- **Your current policies.** Declarations and endorsements for every policy, so your Spot team can see which states each one lists.

## Coverage

- [Workers’ compensation](https://spot.insure/insurance/workers-compensation/quotes): Requirements and insurance options differ by state, and the new state’s payroll and job classifications have to be in the policy.
- [Commercial property](https://spot.insure/insurance/commercial-property/quotes): A new office, shop or warehouse needs its address, contents and values added before you move anything in.
- [General liability](https://spot.insure/insurance/general-liability/quotes): New locations and new kinds of work should be listed so the policy describes the operations you actually run.
- [Commercial auto](https://spot.insure/insurance/commercial-auto/quotes): Vehicles garaged in the new state, or employees driving for work there, need to be on the auto policy.
- [Employment practices liability](https://spot.insure/insurance/employment-practices/quotes): EPLI quotes start from employee counts and locations, so staff in the new state belong in the application.

## Common questions

### Does my workers’ comp policy cover an employee in another state?

Not necessarily. Workers’ compensation rules and options differ by state, so your Spot team checks whether your policy can add the new state or whether you need coverage there.

### Do I need a new policy for every state?

Not always. Sometimes an existing policy can be endorsed to add a state, location or vehicle. We check that first and only quote new coverage where it’s needed.

### Where can I read about a state’s rules?

Spot publishes state-by-state business insurance guides. Your Spot team applies them to your operation and confirms the details with your broker.

### Can my broker make these changes instead?

Yes. Spot works with your broker rather than replacing them, takes no commissions on premiums and follows up until each change is made.
