# Do I Need Insurance for Lyft in California?

Yes. Keep the California personal auto insurance Lyft requires and confirm that it permits your rideshare use. California sets separate waiting and accepted-trip liability requirements; your own car, uninsured-motorist protection and injury benefits need separate checks. This guide reconciles the current statute with Lyft’s October 2026 certificate and identifies older official summaries that differ.

Research checked: 2026-10-26. Amounts are USD in the U.S. and CAD in Canada.

## What You Need Before Driving

### Keep a California Policy That Names You

Yes. Lyft’s California requirements call for personal vehicle insurance issued in California with your name listed on the policy. Its agreement also requires valid liability insurance that names or schedules you to operate the vehicle and meets applicable legal requirements. Keep that policy current when Lyft supplies insurance during a trip: the company policy does not replace your ordinary off-app insurance or the documents Lyft requires for approval. Check the declarations, covered vehicle, insured drivers and expiration date together. A photograph of a current insurance card proves less than a policy expressly permitting the work. Tell your insurer that you will transport paying Lyft passengers, and ask what happens while you are waiting for requests, driving to a pickup and carrying a passenger. Obtain the actual endorsement or policy wording for any promised extension. Uploading a personal policy to Lyft does not itself remove that policy’s business or livery exclusion.

### Separate the Ordinary 30/60/15 Floor from TNC Insurance

California DMV states ordinary minimum liability limits of $30,000 for one person’s injury or death, $60,000 for more than one person in an accident, and $15,000 for property damage. Insurance Code §11580.1 supplies the underlying ordinary policy framework. Those figures answer the registration and ordinary financial-responsibility question; they are not the complete insurance requirements for a Lyft shift. California’s separate TNC statute sets different limits and periods. Do not buy a 30/60/15 personal policy and conclude that it alone satisfies every Lyft exposure. Equally, a large trip-period platform limit does not show that your car meets the ordinary requirements when you log off. Liability compensates other people for covered injury or property damage. Comprehensive or collision alone does not meet financial-responsibility requirements. Keep evidence in the vehicle and check the driver, vehicle and use covered by the proof, rather than treating any policy number as sufficient.

### Confirm That You Are in the Personal-Vehicle TNC Category

This guide addresses Lyft’s ordinary passenger TNC operation. PUC §§5430–5431 define the article’s scope and describe a personal vehicle with no more than eight occupants including the driver, required safety compliance and a qualifying ownership or authorized-use arrangement; taxis and limousines are excluded from that definition. Lyft’s agreement and insurance help separately address professionally licensed livery and TCP drivers, who must maintain their own commercial auto insurance. A premium vehicle or expensive ride does not by itself answer which licensing category applies. Resolve that category before applying a limit from this guide. Ask whether the service is ordinary app-arranged TNC transportation, a permitted charter-party or limousine operation, or another company’s independently insured service. The same app interface can expose the driver to different contractual and insurance arrangements. This guide does not establish commercial operating authority, airport permission or eligibility of a particular vehicle.

### Decide What the Rideshare Endorsement Must Actually Do

California does not make the word “rideshare” on an insurance advertisement a substitute for coverage terms. PUC §5434 permits an insurer to cover TNC use expressly, including through an endorsement, while making clear that the ordinary personal policy need not cover the app-on exposure. Lyft recommends considering rideshare insurance or an endorsement for more complete protection. Your decision is therefore about the gaps left by the combined policies. Ask whether the product extends liability during waiting, preserves physical damage, changes your deductible, adds medical or uninsured-motorist protection, and covers every app you actually use. Get the endorsement number, effective date and excluded activities in writing. Do not assume that a passenger-rideshare extension also covers restaurant or package delivery. If the insurer cannot insure the complete use, ask about an appropriate commercial product rather than concealing the work. The required policy form depends on the insurer’s wording and your operation. PUC §5432 separately requires the TNC to give written insurance and personal-policy exclusion disclosures as part of its driver agreement.

## California Coverage by Driving Period

### Waiting Requires California’s 50/100/30 Framework

For the ordinary California TNC waiting period, PUC §5433(c) requires primary liability of at least $50,000 per person for death or personal injury, $100,000 per incident, and $30,000 for property damage. It also requires at least $200,000 per occurrence of excess coverage above the specified primary limits. Lyft’s California driver page says its third-party insurance is primary during Period 1 and that it maintains the $200,000 excess. The California certificate lists the corresponding 50/100/30 and $200,000 entries for the October 2026–October 2027 policies. This is more specific than Lyft’s general U.S. 50/100/25 waiting summary. Do not substitute the national property-damage number for California’s requirement. The primary and excess provisions have their own wording; the extra $200,000 is not a separate first-dollar policy or a promise that every kind of loss has a single combined limit.

### The Million-Dollar Liability Period Begins at Acceptance

PUC §5433(b) sets primary $1 million liability from acceptance of a ride request until the app transaction is completed or the ride is complete, whichever is later. You do not have to wait until the passenger enters the car for that liability period to begin. Driving toward the pickup can therefore fall into a different liability period from circling for an unaccepted request. The California certificate lists separate Period 2 and Period 3 policies, each with $1 million combined single liability limits. Preserve the acceptance time if an accident occurs while approaching a rider. A cancellation, incomplete pickup or disputed app status calls for the actual trip record and policy definition, rather than a guess based on whether someone was sitting in the back seat. The statutory timing is a coverage framework; it does not resolve excluded drivers, unauthorized vehicles or other operative policy conditions.

### Finishing One Ride Can Return You to the Waiting Exposure

The waiting provision also covers the interval after the app transaction or ride is completed, whichever is later, until another request is accepted or the driver logs off. Dropping off a passenger does not mean that the next ten minutes automatically retain every in-trip benefit. Consider the sequence: passenger exits, the trip is completed, the app stays available, then another request is accepted. Different policies or benefits may attach to those intervals. Lyft’s California help describes the return to Period 1, while the statute’s “whichever is later” wording controls the legal boundary described here. Do not end a ride in the app early to change a claim classification or continue treating personal errands as part of a finished trip. Keep accurate app records and explain the actual activity to the insurer. The liability transition does not by itself establish when a separate injury or vehicle-damage policy begins or ends.

### California Does Not Require a Personal Denial Before TNC Cover

The general Lyft summary says waiting liability may apply if personal insurance does not. Read that alongside California’s specific law: PUC §5433(d) says TNC insurance must not depend on a personal policy first denying a claim, and the personal insurer must not be required to deny first. Section 5433(e) also addresses the company’s first-dollar obligation if qualifying driver-maintained TNC insurance has lapsed or ceased. Accordingly, do not present “get your personal insurer’s denial letter first” as a universal California filing requirement. Report the accident promptly to the relevant parties and supply accurate insurance information, but ask the TNC insurer to identify the specific legal and policy basis for any sequencing demand. This distinction concerns the required TNC insurance; it does not automatically waive documentation, a damage deductible or conditions of a separate optional coverage. Claims cooperation remains important even when one insurer cannot require another to deny first.

## Your Car and an Uninsured Motorist

### Use the Amended UM/UIM Law and the Current Certificate

The current text of PUC §5433(b)(2) requires $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident of primary uninsured- and underinsured-motorist coverage while the passenger is in the vehicle. It identifies the TNC as solely responsible for that obligation. The statute records the 2025 SB 371 amendment effective January 1, 2026, and Lyft’s California certificate expressly lists 60/300 UM/UIM for Period 3 effective October 1, 2026. The CPUC insurance summary still displays an older $1 million UM/UIM figure. We identify that discrepancy rather than blending the numbers or implying the agency summary has been updated. For prospective driving on the research date, the current statute and current certificate are the more specific evidence for the figures stated here. For an earlier accident, obtain the actual policy and amendments effective on that date; the October certificate cannot establish every earlier renewal’s coverage.

### Do Not Extend Passenger-On-Board UM/UIM to Every Minute Online

The statutory UM/UIM period differs from the million-dollar liability period. Liability begins at acceptance, while the expressly required 60/300 UM/UIM runs from the passenger entering until exiting the car. A collision with an uninsured driver while you are approaching a pickup therefore raises a different first-party coverage question from the same collision with a passenger aboard. The certificate confirms the listed Period 3 provision; it does not establish every possible additional endorsement or off-period benefit. Ask your insurer which UM/UIM applies during waiting, approaching pickup and off-app driving, whether rideshare use changes that cover, and how any overlapping policies coordinate. Do not infer a benefit solely from the fact that someone else caused the crash. Uninsured-motorist bodily-injury protection, liability owed to other people and physical damage to your own car are separate questions with different insured persons, triggers and limits.

### Keep Both Comprehensive and Collision if You Want the Contingent Benefit

Lyft’s U.S. summary conditions its contingent comprehensive and collision protection on the driver carrying comprehensive and collision on the personal policy. Its California certificate says contingent auto physical damage under Periods 2 and 3 is limited to actual cash value or repair cost, whichever is less, with a $2,500 deductible. That does not promise a new replacement car, repayment of the entire loan, or repairs during every online minute. A driver with liability-only personal insurance should not assume that an accepted ride creates the missing physical-damage benefit. Check that both coverages were actually in force at the time of loss, that the car and driver qualify, and that the relevant trip period applies. Preserve the personal declarations and endorsement with the renewal certificate. Ask separately about rental reimbursement, towing, loss of use and any finance balance: those are not established by the certificate’s short physical-damage sentence.

### A Waiting-Period Crash Can Leave the Car Unrepaired

Suppose you are logged in, have not accepted a request and strike a post while repositioning. The California waiting-period liability rules address covered liability to others. The certificate’s contingent physical-damage description identifies Periods 2 and 3, so it does not establish payment for your own car in this waiting example. PUC §5434 also means ordinary personal cover cannot simply be assumed during app-on use. Before starting, ask your personal insurer whether its rideshare extension preserves collision in precisely this period and what deductible applies. The same question matters if hail, theft or another comprehensive-type loss occurs during a shift: the peril’s label alone does not settle the policy’s permitted-use and period requirements. This example illustrates a gap to resolve, not a finding that every insurer excludes every waiting loss. Get an answer tied to the wording, rather than relying on a broad statement that Lyft carries insurance.

## Your Injuries, Income and Health Insurance

### Occupational Accident Protection Is a Separate Benefit

BPC §7455 requires specified occupational accident protection for qualifying app-based drivers, including at least $1 million of medical-expense protection and a statutory disability formula. Lyft’s occupational accident page describes the California program, temporary-total-disability payments based on 66% of average weekly earnings from all network companies subject to limits, and death-related benefits for eligible dependents. These are not the same as third-party auto liability or repairs to your car. If you are hurt, identify the injury benefit as well as the auto claim; do not stop after asking who pays the other driver. The statute’s formula refers to total earnings across network companies over the specified period, so preserve records from each app rather than supplying only a single Lyft payout. Eligibility, disability evidence, benefit coordination and policy limits still matter. This guide does not calculate an individual award or guarantee that an injury meets the policy definition.

### Multiple Apps Change the Injury Analysis

BPC §7455 defines covered online time but does not require coverage for certain accidents outside engaged time when the driver is engaged with another network company or doing personal activities. Lyft’s own occupational accident explanation says its procured policy does not cover a driver who is merely logged into Lyft after accepting a request on another network company, while California waiting eligibility may apply when the driver is available on several apps without accepting a ride. Record each app’s status honestly. “Both apps were open” is not enough information: the insurer needs to know which request was accepted and what you were actually doing. Do not add two benefit limits or assume the same multi-app rule governs auto liability, occupational accident and collision. The statute also addresses contribution when more than one company’s injury insurance covers the accident. That coordination is an insurer issue, not a reason to omit an app from your report.

### The Healthcare Subsidy Does Not Replace a Qualifying Health Plan

BPC §7454 concerns a quarterly healthcare subsidy for qualifying app-based drivers, with engaged-time thresholds and proof-of-enrollment conditions. It is distinct from the accident-specific protection in §7455. A subsidy can help with qualifying health-plan costs, but it does not itself provide an auto policy or establish a medical benefit for a particular collision. If you plan to rely on the subsidy, review the applicable quarter’s engaged-time record, qualifying health-plan rules, proof requested and submission timing. The statute provides a proof window and payment rules; do not assume that all hours with the app open count as engaged time. A driver who receives occupational accident benefits may still need a health plan for unrelated illnesses and injuries. Conversely, holding health insurance does not show that collision damage, liability to passengers or earnings lost during a car repair is insured. Keep these buying and eligibility decisions separate.

### Read Older Coverage-Gap Notices in Their Historical Context

The California Department of Insurance’s TNC notice usefully warns that personal livery exclusions can leave drivers exposed and advises contacting the insurer. Its broad statement that a TNC need not provide UM/UIM is not a complete account of today’s §5433 requirement. The CPUC summary likewise retains the older $1 million passenger UM/UIM figure. These documents remain useful for explaining why a personal policy and a platform policy must be read together, but their numerical or categorical statements cannot all be carried forward unchanged. We use the current enacted text and dated California certificate for the present figures and identify the older guidance’s limits. If your insurer cites a brochure or a driver cites a screenshot, compare its issue date, jurisdiction and operating category before treating it as current evidence. Finding an official logo is the beginning of source review, not proof that every sentence reflects the current law or renewal.

## Borrowing, Financing and Renting a Vehicle

### Resolve Lender Obligations and the Approved Vehicle Together

Lyft’s California disclosures warn that TNC use can conflict with a lienholder agreement. Its Terms require the legal right to operate the vehicle and use of the vehicle reported to and approved by Lyft. If the car is financed, ask the lender whether rideshare use is permitted and what physical-damage protection must remain in force. The platform’s contingent benefit and deductible may differ from the cover promised in your finance contract. A loan balance above the vehicle’s actual cash value is another question; the California certificate does not show a guaranteed-asset-protection benefit. If a family member owns the car, permission to borrow it and the owner’s insurance are also relevant, and an insurer may need the correct drivers and use disclosed. Do not transfer the policy assumptions from your approved car to a substitute vehicle after a breakdown. ### Express Drive Requires Its Own Insurance Review

Lyft’s California requirements exclude ordinary non-Express Drive rentals from the accepted vehicle category and describe Express Drive as the approved rental option in selected cities. Its rental-insurance help separates personal use, waiting, accepted pickup and passenger periods, and identifies provider-specific arrangements. The ordinary owner-driven car result in this guide therefore cannot establish a renter’s coverage. Before collecting a car, obtain the actual rental agreement and current insurance information for that vehicle, provider and location. Ask who is insured, which personal and app miles are permitted, whether other apps are authorized, which damage charge or deductible applies and how to report an incident. Do not assume a credit-card rental benefit covers driving for compensation. Nor should a renter conclude that buying an optional rental product overrides the rental agreement’s prohibited-use terms. The correct comparison is the entire permitted-use and insurance arrangement, not only the weekly rental price.

### A Commercial Policy Does Not Grant Every Operating Permission

Lyft’s insurance overview excludes livery and TCP drivers from the ordinary procured rideshare policies, and the agreement requires those professionally licensed drivers to have the applicable commercial insurance. Its California disclosures separately warn that airport operations require authorization and that unauthorized California airport operations are prohibited. These are different controls. A commercial policy does not grant airport access; an airport placard or operating permit does not amend an insurance exclusion. If your work includes commercial bookings, wheelchair-accessible services supplied through a separate operator, or airport trips, verify the actual operator, authority and policy. Do not apply the owner-driven TNC checker snapshot simply because a trip appeared in Lyft. The California disclosures also explain that some wheelchair-accessible operators maintain independent insurance. Request the relevant documents for the service you are joining rather than inferring that every ride option is insured under the same company policy.

### Treat Vehicle and Insurance Renewals as Active Requirements

Lyft’s California page says required documents must stay current and that missing an expiration update can cause temporary deactivation. It also describes recurring vehicle inspections, including the mileage-based trigger, and local document requirements. These operational requirements matter to insurance research because the policy and platform eligibility should describe the same vehicle and driver. Recheck the certificate when the platform renewal changes, your personal policy renews, you replace the car, or you change the driving activity. A prior declaration page plus a new app screenshot is not a complete current policy set. Save the new declaration, endorsement and app approval together. This does not mean every administrative lapse automatically defeats an insurance claim: that depends on applicable law and policy wording. It means you should correct the records before driving and avoid presenting stale documents as current evidence.

## What to Do After a California Collision

### Report the Collision and Identify Every Potential Coverage

Get emergency assistance first when needed, then follow Lyft’s collision-reporting process and promptly notify the relevant insurer. Lyft’s reporting page provides an accident contact route, while its injury help distinguishes an auto accident from another injury incident. Tell the claim handler whether you were off app, waiting, en route to a pickup or carrying a passenger, and whether you had accepted work elsewhere. Identify liability, vehicle damage, UM/UIM and occupational accident questions separately. A claim reference for one benefit does not prove that every potential coverage has been opened. Provide the facts and documents requested without guessing a coverage conclusion. The California Department of Insurance’s accident guidance recommends collecting driver and witness information, photographs and policy details, and cooperating with the investigation. A platform support conversation is useful evidence of reporting, but the insurer or administrator handling the applicable policy determines the claim under its terms.

### Preserve Precise App Times and the Applicable Policy Version

California PUC §5435 requires the TNC or insurer to cooperate in coverage investigations, including exchanging the accident time and precise app log-on and log-off times. Keep your own contemporaneous evidence too: request acceptance, pickup, completion or cancellation, the trip identifier, location, other apps’ activity and any personal interruption. A screenshot taken after the crash can show the later screen without proving the status at impact. Ask for the actual policy, declarations and endorsements effective on the accident date, as well as the certificate. The current California certificate lists October 1, 2026–October 1, 2027 policies; it cannot decide a claim outside those dates or override exclusions. Keep a copy of the earlier policy set if you are researching an older accident. Accurate timing is especially important where accepted-trip liability, passenger-on-board UM/UIM and waiting physical damage have different boundaries.

### Do Not Confuse an Insurer Report with the DMV Accident Report

California DMV’s financial-responsibility guidance states a ten-day accident-reporting requirement where anyone is injured or killed or either party’s property damage exceeds $1,000, with additional provisions for certain off-highway accidents. Reporting to Lyft, the police or an insurer is not the same task as making the required DMV report. The older Department of Insurance accident webpage still mentions a $750 threshold; this guide uses DMV’s current $1,000 figure instead of repeating that stale sentence. Review the current DMV procedure and the facts of your incident promptly. Maintain evidence that appropriate financial responsibility covered the driver and vehicle at the accident time. DMV explains that a driver can face suspension proceedings where that proof is missing; the existence of a platform’s certificate is not a determination that the specific driver and vehicle were covered. Seek the relevant insurer’s documentation if a proof question arises.

### Ask for Written Coverage and Settlement Explanations

If a claim is delayed, denied or offered at an amount you do not understand, ask the insurer to identify the coverage, exclusion, valuation and deductible it used. The Department of Insurance’s accident guide discusses claim handling, investigation, repair-shop choice and routes for assistance. Its auto guide explains the differences between liability and optional car-damage protection. Use those explanations to frame a specific question: for example, whether the company is disputing the trip period, the presence of personal comprehensive and collision, or the car’s actual cash value. Keep estimates, photographs, medical records and lost-earnings evidence as appropriate. Do not authorize a settlement merely because a platform representative supplied a policy number. A certificate is informational and does not amend the insurance contract. If the insurer’s explanation remains unclear, the Department of Insurance can assist with an insurance complaint; Lyft’s California disclosures also identify a CPUC complaint route for unresolved platform issues.
