# Do I Need Insurance for DoorDash in California?

Yes. Keep your own valid auto insurance and get written confirmation that it permits paid DoorDash deliveries. California requires separate platform liability during engaged time and occupational injury protection; neither establishes insurance for your own car repairs. Health stipends have their own hours, plan and proof requirements.

Research checked: 2026-10-27. Amounts are USD in the U.S. and CAD in Canada.

## Before Your First California Delivery

### Keep Insurance That Permits Paid Deliveries

Yes. Before delivering DoorDash orders by car in California, keep valid automobile insurance and obtain your insurer's written answer about paid delivery use. DoorDash's requirements page says drivers need insurance, and section 10.1 of its current agreement requires insurance of the types and amounts required by law to provide the services, at your expense. California Insurance Code section 11580.1 describes insured vehicles, purposes of use, insured persons and permitted exclusions. It does not establish that every personal policy accepts food or grocery delivery. Give the insurer every app, driver, vehicle and type of work, including passenger trips. Ask for the actual policy provision or endorsement that accepts those activities and its effective date. An insurance card and an approved Dasher account do not answer that underwriting question.

Evidence: Verified. Scope: California DoorDash; ordinary owned passenger car unless expressly discussing another category. Statutory duties and posted summaries do not establish an individual issued policy or claim outcome. Checked 2026-10-27.

### The Ordinary Minimum Is 30/60/15

Vehicle Code section 16056(a)(2) sets the ordinary liability minimum for policies issued or renewed from January 1, 2025 at $30,000 for injury or death of one person, $60,000 for injury or death of more than one person in one accident, and $15,000 for property damage. DMV's current insurance page corroborates these amounts. This legal floor is different from an assessment of how much protection you need and from a platform's delivery-period liability. The same statute still prints the earlier 15/30/5 limits for older policies and a future increase beginning in 2035. Read the effective-date paragraph before using a number. Ask your insurer about a suitable limit for your finances and work; this guide does not make a personal limit recommendation.

### Check the Driver, Vehicle and Purpose Together

Ask whether delivery permission applies while waiting online, traveling to a pickup, shopping, carrying an order and returning after completion. Identify borrowed or replacement vehicles and any other household driver. Section 11580.1 includes a framework for permissive users, but it also permits specified exclusions and written named-driver exclusions; permission to use a car is not permission for every paid purpose. Keep the declarations, application answers, exclusions and endorsements together with the insurer's response. If the insurer calls a product rideshare insurance, ask expressly whether DoorDash delivery is included and whether it covers every selected app. A product label alone cannot establish its terms. Repeat the inquiry when the car, driver or work changes, before assuming the earlier answer still applies.

### Maintain Proof and Cancellation Notices

The U.S.-selected DoorDash agreement reviewed here states July 17, 2026 in its body; the page wrapper separately says May 11. Its insurance provisions are sections 10.1–10.4. Section 10.2 requires current certificates when requested, updated certificates when coverage is purchased, renewed or altered, and at least 30 days' prior written notice before canceling a policy required by the agreement. Section 10.1 treats a failure to maintain satisfactory required coverage as a material breach that can end access to work. Keep renewal evidence and check the effective dates when switching insurers. Do not treat a stale indexed version of the agreement as the current clause numbering, or a certificate upload as an insurer's acceptance of delivery use.

Evidence: Company-reported. Scope: California DoorDash; ordinary owned passenger car unless expressly discussing another category. Statutory duties and posted summaries do not establish an individual issued policy or claim outcome. Checked 2026-10-27.

## What DoorDash Describes for California Deliveries

### Waiting Online Leaves an Auto-insurance Question

DoorDash's current auto article places California in its All Other US States section. That section describes third-party auto liability during a Delivery Service Period and says your own auto insurance is primary when you are online without an accepted request. It does not establish California waiting-period liability from DoorDash. Keep delivery-use permission for this interval rather than relying on the larger active-delivery figure in another source. If an accident occurs between orders, retain the last completion time, the next acceptance time and what you were actually doing. A statement that your own policy is primary is not a promise that your policy covers the use. The policy's insured persons, covered car and exclusions still need checking.

Evidence: Company-reported. Scope: California DoorDash; ordinary owned passenger car unless expressly discussing another category. Statutory duties and posted summaries do not establish an individual issued policy or claim outcome. Checked 2026-10-27.

### Engaged-time Liability Has a Statutory Condition

Business and Professions Code section 7455(f)(1) requires a delivery network company to maintain at least $1 million of automobile liability per occurrence for third parties during engaged time in instances where the car is not otherwise covered by a policy complying with Insurance Code section 11580.1(b). This is a duty protecting the public, not a promise of repairs to your car. DoorDash's California-applicable summary describes liability for another party's injury or damage during its Delivery Service Period but does not itself supply a California certificate or detailed priority wording. Read the statute's otherwise-covered condition and obtain the current applicable policy before assuming which insurer pays first. Passenger-company provisions in the next two statutory paragraphs govern different services.

### Acceptance, Cancellation and Completion Matter

DoorDash describes its Delivery Service Period as beginning when you accept a request and ending when the order is marked delivered, unassigned or canceled. California's section 7463(j) separately defines engaged time from acceptance to completion, subject to exclusions for canceled requests, abandoned performance and specified fraud-prevention adjustments. Preserve the actual app records rather than labeling the whole shift active. A crash on the way to a pickup can raise a different period question from a crash after unassignment. Shopping connected with an accepted delivery is included in the statutory delivery-services definition, but the actual request and timing still matter. Ask the insurer to identify the policy definition it applied and reconcile it with the facts of the incident.

### Request the California Documents That Actually Apply

Request the current California auto policy or certificate, declarations, covered activity, insured-driver terms, limit, priority and claims instructions from DoorDash or the insurer. The agreement includes certificate links in provisions expressly addressed to other states; those do not establish a California policy. The public linked file was unavailable during this review. That failed retrieval does not prove insurance is absent, but it also supplies no current California carrier, policy number or term. The All Other US States summary does not impose the primary-claim-and-denial-letter condition printed in its separate international section. Do not import that Canadian condition into a California claim. Notify the relevant insurers promptly and ask for the actual applicable coordination provisions.

## Your Car, Replacement Vehicles and Equipment

### Choose Coverage for Your Own Vehicle

DoorDash's auto summary leaves damage to your own vehicle with you, and its occupational FAQ separately excludes car and bicycle damage. The California Department of Insurance guide distinguishes collision from comprehensive insurance: collision addresses covered collision losses, while comprehensive addresses specified other causes such as theft or vandalism. Buying liability alone does not establish either protection. Ask how each selected coverage and deductible applies to paid deliveries throughout the shift, including while waiting. Confirm valuation, glass, exclusions and who pays if another driver cannot be identified. Work out whether you can fund the deductible and lost working days while the vehicle is being repaired. The existence of a statutory $1 million delivery liability duty does not solve these own-car costs.

### Separate Uninsured Injury and Property Protection

Insurance Code section 11580.2 governs uninsured-motorist protection, with detailed definitions, permissible written coverage choices and claim conditions. The CDI guide distinguishes bodily-injury protection from uninsured-motorist property damage and collision-deductible waiver. Its property-damage explanation includes a $3,500 limit and an identified uninsured-driver condition; do not promise that this pays an unidentified hit-and-run repair. Ask which protections you actually bought or waived and how delivery use affects them. Also ask about underinsured-driver injury protection and how its limit interacts with the at-fault driver's insurance. These are separate questions from whether DoorDash pays another person's liability claim. A generic claim report to the app does not establish that all statutory uninsured-claim preservation steps have been completed.

### Check the Loan Balance and Replacement-car Permission

A total-loss settlement based on the vehicle's value may leave a financing balance. CDI's auto guide discusses gap protection separately from collision and comprehensive; ask about the actual loan or lease protection and its exclusions rather than assuming a platform benefit pays the shortfall. Check rental reimbursement limits and duration as well. Payment for temporary transportation does not authorize paid deliveries in the replacement vehicle: obtain the rental company's permission and the relevant insurer's answer. DoorDash's equipment provisions place ordinary equipment costs and risks on the contractor, subject to law. Keep enough information about the replacement car and policy to report a claim accurately. An income plan that depends on continuing deliveries should account for these separate contractual restrictions.

### Borrowed Cars, Bicycles and Commercial Work Need Separate Review

Section 9.3 of DoorDash's agreement specifically addresses California contractors using a passenger vehicle, bicycle, scooter or similar transportation. Section 7463's delivery definition likewise identifies several means of transport; it does not turn every commercial truck operation into ordinary passenger-car delivery. A borrowed car adds insured-driver and purpose-of-use questions under section 11580.1, while a bicycle or scooter needs its own liability, equipment and injury review. DoorDash's occupational FAQ says that injury protection does not repair the bike. The checker therefore withholds ordinary owned-car coverage findings for borrowed, rented, non-car and commercial configurations. Use the questions to obtain the specific permissions and policies, rather than treating this car-based analysis as a determination for a different vehicle.

## California Occupational Injury Benefits

### Use California’s Injury Rule, Not the Generic FAQ Figure

Section 7455(a) requires occupational accident insurance for specified injuries suffered while online, including medical-expense protection up to at least $1 million and disability payments calculated under California's rule. DoorDash's U.S. FAQ displays a generic 50% wage figure with a $500 weekly maximum, but expressly directs California residents to a schedule of benefits and notes California provisions while signed on without a delivery. No current California schedule was available in the rendered FAQ. Do not use its generic national wage figure as California's statutory entitlement. Ask the injury insurer for the current California schedule, policy terms and calculation. The statutory requirement provides a review baseline; it does not prove that every reported injury satisfies coverage conditions or that every expense will be paid.

### Preserve Earnings From Every Network Company

California's statutory disability calculation is 66% of average weekly earnings from all network companies, with that average defined as the preceding 28 days' total network earnings divided by four. Section 7455(a)(2) incorporates minimum and maximum weekly rates determined under Labor Code section 4453(a), for up to the first 104 weeks after injury. The DWC notice sets the 2026 reference minimum at $264.61 and maximum at $1,764.11. These are dated reference rates, not an unconditional payment quote for every injury or year. Retain statements from every app for the relevant 28 days and ask the insurer to show the earnings, injury date, percentage, applicable floor or cap and covered duration. Do not calculate benefits using only DoorDash deposits if other network earnings belong in the statutory base.

### Online Injury Protection Is Broader Than Engaged Time

Section 7455(c) defines online time to include being available to receive service requests as well as engaged time. Subsection (d) limits the required occupational and accidental-death protection for an accident outside engaged time if you were engaged on another network company's platform or doing personal activities. It also provides insurer contribution where more than one network company's policy covers the accident. Preserve all app status records, the activity you were performing and the acceptance or cancellation times. Waiting for an order does not produce the same injury question as doing a personal errand while leaving the app open. Two open apps do not promise two full payments. Ask each insurer to explain its coverage decision and coordination using the actual facts.

### Death and Burial Benefits Depend on the Incorporated Rules

Section 7455(b) requires accidental-death protection for specified online injuries resulting in death, benefiting spouses, children or other dependents. It incorporates Labor Code sections 4701 and 4702 for burial expenses and death benefits. Those provisions address different components, injury dates and dependent categories; they do not create one universal payout for every family. Section 4701 includes a $10,000 burial-expense limit for the later injury-date category, while section 4702 contains dependency-based calculations. Ask the insurer for the applicable schedule, dependency evidence, date rules and calculation rather than relying on a headline benefit amount. Keep these injury and survivor protections separate from the auto liability claim and from damage to the deceased driver's vehicle.

### Occupational Benefits Can Affect Auto Recoveries

Section 7455(e) treats the specified occupational and death benefits as amounts payable under workers' compensation law or a disability benefit for determining amounts under the referenced automobile-insurance provisions. Insurance Code section 11580.2(h) separately addresses specified workers' compensation reductions in uninsured-motorist recovery. This coordination matters when an accident produces several injury claims. Disclose relevant payments to the insurers and request a written explanation of any offset or reimbursement demand, with the policy and statutory basis. Do not assume occupational medical, health insurance, MedPay and uninsured-motorist benefits will all pay the same bill independently. CDI's Proposition 22 implementation notice treats the occupational medical and disability product as disability insurance; the applicable claims standards must be selected for that product.

## Work Status and Earnings Are Separate Questions

### Independent-contractor Status Has Conditions

Business and Professions Code section 7451 supplies independent-contractor treatment for an app-based driver when its four conditions are satisfied, including freedom from prescribed work times, mandatory acceptance, restrictions on other network work and restrictions on other lawful work. Do not convert the label in an agreement into a finding about every work arrangement. Section 7452 also addresses a written contract, specified termination grounds and an appeals process. DoorDash's section 10.3 addresses the contractor's insurance responsibilities where law requires them, with separate Canadian wording that does not govern California. The occupational insurance required by section 7455 is not proof that every ordinary employee workers' compensation benefit or administrative procedure applies. Ask about the actual status and product before choosing a claim route.

### Mileage Compensation Does Not Insure a Collision

Section 7453 establishes an earnings floor using engaged time and, for qualifying passenger-vehicle work, an engaged-mile component for vehicle expenses, with statutory adjustments. The text includes a 2021 base mileage amount and an annual adjustment mechanism; this guide does not present that old base as the current rate. An earnings adjustment is a compensation calculation, not a promise to reimburse a particular collision, deductible or rental bill. DoorDash's equipment terms separately address vehicle and operating costs. Keep earnings and mileage records for pay questions, and keep the insurance policy for covered-loss questions. Receiving a mileage amount therefore does not eliminate the need to arrange delivery-permitted collision or comprehensive protection if you want insurance for your own car.

### A Health Stipend Is a Third Layer

The health subsidy in section 7454 contributes toward qualifying health coverage when the statutory hours and plan conditions are met. Occupational accident insurance under section 7455 responds to specified covered injuries, and automobile liability responds to specified harm caused to others. They are distinct benefits with different triggers. Routine health needs, a crash injury and a damaged car can therefore require three different questions rather than one claim to the app. Keep the health plan, occupational schedule and auto documents separate, and ask how overlapping medical bills are coordinated. Covered California's guide explains the stipend's role alongside qualifying individual-market coverage; it does not turn the stipend into an auto policy or a guarantee of all medical expenses.

## California Healthcare Stipends in 2026

### Count Engaged Hours on Each App

Section 7454 uses average weekly engaged time on the particular network company's platform during the calendar quarter. At least 15 but less than 25 hours qualifies for the half tier; 25 or more qualifies for the full tier, subject to the other conditions. Waiting online without an accepted service is not automatically engaged time under section 7463. The statute requires earnings-period and quarter-to-date engaged-hours information. Save these statements and compare them with DoorDash's quarterly assessment. Section 7454(f) permits subsidies from more than one network company, but it does not pool all apps' hours to create DoorDash eligibility. Check the tier separately for each company. A short state-guide summary about multiple companies should be read with those actual statutory thresholds.

### Check the Subscriber and Plan Type

A qualifying health plan under section 7463(n) is one in which you are the subscriber, is not employer sponsored and is not Medicare or Medicaid. DoorDash's eligibility page applies plan and primary-policyholder requirements and requests coverage evidence. Covered California's June 2026 guide explains that qualifying individual-market coverage can be obtained through Covered California or directly from a health insurer; it distinguishes employer coverage, Medicare and Medi-Cal. Do not assume that being listed as a dependent proves subscriber eligibility, or that any insurance card establishes the right coverage dates. Confirm whose name is the subscriber, the plan type and the months of enrollment before relying on a stipend to fund premiums. The checker does not collect those facts or decide health-plan eligibility.

### Use the Posted 2026 Quarterly Amounts

DoorDash's current California table lists $868.38 for the half tier and $1,736.76 for the full tier per quarter in 2026. Covered California's June 10, 2026 guide gives a $706 monthly bronze-plan reference; section 7463 defines the average ACA contribution as 82% of that reference. Three months at 82% produces $1,736.76, and half produces $868.38. The guide's monthly $579 and $289 figures are rounded explanations, so multiplying those rounded amounts gives a different total. Use the actual quarter and year, and check the updated table rather than carrying these numbers into 2027. Section 7454(g) assigns publication of the following year's statewide premium reference to Covered California. Your own premium is not automatically the statutory reference amount.

### Distinguish Statutory Timing From the Posted Window

Section 7454(d) allows no less than 15 calendar days after quarter-end to provide enrollment proof and requires a due subsidy within 15 days of quarter-end or proof submission, whichever is later. DoorDash's current cycle article says the application opens on the fifth day and lists January, April, July and October windows running from the 5th through the 21st, with changes possible. Its eligibility page contains an inconsistent first-day opening sentence but lists the same 5–21 dates. Follow the actual invitation and current cycle, save the submission receipt and ask promptly about an apparent mismatch. Company statements about a 15-calendar-day review and payment within three business days after approval describe its process; they do not replace the statutory timing rule.

### Choose Proof and Review Any Sharing Consent

Covered California's October 1, 2026 guide explains how enrollees or their delegates can generate quarterly proof after a quarter closes and retain a PDF in Documents and Correspondence. It also describes optional sharing of enrollment information with selected network companies; the June guide says the current sharing agreement is with DoorDash. Review the selected household member, company, account contact details and consent before authorizing disclosure. The illustrated instructions are for enrollers and include an agent certification, PIN and signature, so a consumer should use the appropriate account workflow or ask an authorized enroller for help. Do not copy an agent certification as a consumer instruction. Keep your proof and receipt. Covered California directs disputes about the app's stipend decision to the network company, while health enrollment issues follow Covered California's process.

## After an Accident: Separate Reports and Evidence

### Report the Incident and Open the Right Claims

DoorDash agreement section 10.4 asks for notice to DoorDash and/or its carrier within 48 hours where practicable for specified incidents while logged in and immediately before or after logging in or out, plus cooperation with insurance review. Its auto article links an insurance reporting form; the occupational FAQ lists a separate injury intake route. Notify your own insurer as well and identify whether the report concerns another person's liability loss, your vehicle, your injury or more than one. Save confirmation numbers and copies rather than assuming one support conversation opens every claim. The FAQ's historical carrier dates do not independently authenticate the particular current policy that covers you. Ask for the actual insurer, claims administrator and policy applicable on the accident date.

### Keep One Chronology With Every App’s Status

CDI's accident guide recommends gathering the other parties' insurance and contact information, witness details and scene evidence, and cooperating with the insurer's investigation. Add the app records that determine delivery and occupational periods: login, acceptance, pickup, cancellation or unassignment, completion and any other app's accepted request. Keep photographs, estimates, medical records, expenses and the relevant prior earnings statements. Describe the actual activity without guessing that a broad label such as working proves a particular coverage period. If an insurer disputes the status, ask which policy definition and factual timestamp it used. These records support a review of the claim; they do not guarantee acceptance or replace any formal claim, statutory notice or deadline.

### The DMV SR1 Is a Separate Report

Vehicle Code section 16000 generally requires a DMV report within 10 days for an accident involving injury or death, or damage to any one person's property exceeding $1,000, subject to the section's exceptions. The June 2025 SR1 instructions say the driver's report is required regardless of fault and is additional to reports made to police or an insurer. They ask for the actual issuing insurer, policy and vehicle information. Filing a DoorDash support report does not satisfy this DMV filing requirement. Use the current SR1 instructions for the incident, retain your copy and verify the details before submission. A reportable collision can therefore create a 10-day DMV task alongside insurance notices that have different wording and deadlines.

### Do Not Treat Support Notice as Preserving Every Remedy

Insurance Code section 11580.2(i) contains particular steps and timing for preserving specified uninsured-motorist claims, including routes involving an action, agreement or formal arbitration steps. Other parts address different conditions for uninsured, underinsured or unidentified vehicles. A DoorDash incident report, an SR1 filing and a routine claim acknowledgment are different acts; none should be assumed to satisfy every applicable preservation requirement. If an uninsured-driver injury claim is possible, obtain prompt advice on the actual policy and statutory deadline instead of waiting for the platform liability investigation to finish. Ask the insurer to identify the coverage and required procedure in writing. This guide does not calculate an individual's limitation period from incomplete accident facts.

## Reviewing a Claim Decision or Settlement

### Ask for the Missing Information and Written Basis

California claims regulation section 2695.5 establishes communication and acknowledgment duties, including specified 15-calendar-day responses and initial claim-handling steps, subject to its terms. Section 2695.7 addresses acceptance or denial after proof of claim, continuing notices and a written explanation of a denial's factual and policy basis. Its commonly cited 40-day framework has scope and exceptions, including disability and specified repair-bill situations; it is not a universal clock for every product on this page. Keep the date the insurer received the claim and requested proof, ask what remains missing, and request the provision supporting a denial. A delay or denial should be evaluated under the rule for that insurer and claim, rather than a generic app-support response target.

### Check Comparable Cars, Taxes and Deductions

For automobile total losses, section 2695.8 addresses comparable-vehicle valuation, measurable adjustments, applicable taxes and transfer fees, registration-related amounts, deductibles and retained salvage. Request the valuation report and check model, equipment, mileage, condition and the actual comparable vehicles. In first-party total-loss claims, the regulation provides a conditional reopening procedure if the insured notifies the insurer within 35 calendar days after receiving the claim payment or final settlement offer that a comparable car cannot be purchased for the gross settlement amount. Detailed terms and exceptions apply. It does not promise a new car or payment of the remaining loan. Raise a specific discrepancy promptly with supporting listings and receipts. Delivery use does not remove the need first to establish coverage under the applicable policy.

### Review Repairs and Deductible Recovery Separately

Section 2695.8 addresses repair-shop choice, repair estimates, specified replacement-part standards and reasonable towing or storage after covered losses, with conditions. Ask for an itemized explanation of a changed estimate or deduction. Section 2695.7 also addresses insurer subrogation, including recovery and sharing of a deductible in the specified circumstances. A claim against another driver does not automatically repay your full deductible immediately, and a shop recommendation does not by itself resolve the authorized repair scope. Keep estimates, supplements, invoices and communications about storage dates so you can identify the precise disagreement. Obtain permission and any required inspection before disposing of evidence or authorizing work that might prevent the insurer from examining the loss.

### Injury-product Claims Have Their Own Standards

CDI's February 2021 Proposition 22 notice explains the disability-insurance treatment of the required occupational medical and disability benefits. For applicable life and disability claims, section 2695.11 requires an explanation of benefits with payments and sets conditions for specified overpayment recovery, preauthorization and contested-claim notices. It prohibits requiring preauthorization for emergency medical services. Its contested-claim rule expressly references Insurance Code section 10123.13; do not apply every provision without checking the product and claim. Ask for the computation and any written exclusion or offset supporting the result. The historical CDI notice's auto-liability cross-reference differs from current section 7455(f), so the current Act controls the liability discussion. Neither source establishes your individual current schedule or claim eligibility.

### Build a Specific Complaint File

If an insurer does not resolve the issue, CDI's nonhealth Request for Assistance form asks for the insurer, policy and claim identifiers, a description of the problem, the outcome sought and supporting documents. Organize the denial, policy wording, app chronology, proof of loss and the disputed calculation so the reviewer can understand the actual coverage or handling issue. The form's instructions say active litigation can cause CDI to defer its regulatory investigation. A complaint is not a court judgment, an automatic benefit approval or a reason to let another deadline pass. A DoorDash stipend dispute follows the company's process described by Covered California rather than becoming an automobile insurance complaint merely because it concerns an insurance subsidy. Send sensitive documents only through the appropriate official channel.
