# Do I Need Insurance for DoorDash in Alberta?

Yes. Alberta DoorDash car couriers need their own valid auto insurance covering the disclosed delivery work. Confirm the insurer’s permitted use, liability, DCPD election and physical-damage cover. Review WCB status and the separate Canadian injury program, and distinguish current policy wording from the January 2027 Care-First transition.

Research checked: 2026-10-26. Amounts are USD in the U.S. and CAD in Canada.

## What an Alberta DoorDash Driver Needs

### Keep Insurance for the Actual Delivery Vehicle and Work

Yes, an Alberta DoorDash car courier needs their own valid auto insurance covering the disclosed delivery activity. DoorDash’s Canadian contractor agreement requires insurance of the legally required types and amounts that covers performance of the contracted services. Alberta’s government also identifies basic auto insurance as compulsory and requires insurance evidence when registering the vehicle. Tell the insurer what you actually do: restaurant or grocery deliveries for compensation, the vehicle and drivers involved, operating locations, frequency, and other apps. Obtain the certificate and any endorsement or written permission implementing the accepted use. A valid pink card does not by itself establish that an insurer has accepted a new delivery risk. Nor does a platform’s excess-auto summary replace the primary insurance and proof obligations in the contract. Keep the policy current through renewals and vehicle changes before taking another delivery.

### Give Written Notice When the Insured Risk Changes

The current Alberta SPF1’s first statutory condition requires the named insured to notify the insurer or agent promptly in writing of a material change in risk within the insured’s knowledge. Adding paid delivery to a personal-use arrangement is a reason to explain the actual change and obtain the insurer’s response, rather than silently relying on the old application. Ask whether the work can be accepted under the insurer’s available personal arrangement, needs a specific approved amendment, or requires another product. The answer depends on the actual contract and underwriting. The standard form’s paying-passenger exclusion is not a sufficient basis to say every delivery of goods is automatically excluded, or automatically permitted. Read the insurer’s endorsements as well as the standard wording. If the insurer changes the contract, retain the completed change document, its effective date, the insured vehicle and any changed limits or deductibles.

### The Ordinary Liability Floor Does Not Answer the Delivery Question

Insurance Act §571 sets a motor-vehicle liability minimum of $200,000 per accident, exclusive of interest and costs, for the stated bodily injury, death and property-damage liability. The same section addresses requests for higher specified limits, subject to the other statutory provisions. That legal floor is distinct from an appropriate purchase decision, the insurer’s permission for delivery work and a passenger transportation-network policy. Ask for an assessment of the actual activity and the liability limit you need. A larger number does not correct an exclusion or inaccurate application. The reviewed Canadian DoorDash auto summary does not establish an Alberta fleet limit to add to the personal policy. Do not import a U.S. DoorDash amount or another platform’s passenger limit to fill that gap. Obtain the current applicable excess policy if you need to establish its insurer, limit, insured vehicles and conditions.

### Check the Current Certificate and Approved Endorsements

The Alberta government’s current-form index identifies the January 2022 SPF1 and separates it from the upcoming Care-First forms. The owner’s certificate shows the selected sections, insured automobiles, limits, deductibles and endorsements; the public blank certificate does not show what you purchased. Alberta also distinguishes standard endorsements available to insurers from conditionally approved wording for a particular insurer. Ask for all the documents actually attached to the policy, including any insurer-specific delivery or business-use provision. A form listed online is not automatically included in your contract, and an endorsement’s name is not enough to establish its scope. Confirm that the insured vehicle and drivers match the work you plan to perform. Where a coverage is removed or reduced, obtain an explanation of the consequences and the completed alteration rather than treating a lower renewal total as a like-for-like insurance comparison.

## DoorDash’s Canadian Contract and Insurance Summary

### Keep the Required Insurance and Renewal Evidence Current

The Canada-selected contractor agreement is posted with a February 12, 2024 update date. Section 11.1 makes the courier responsible for maintaining the required insurance at their expense and treats failure to maintain satisfactory coverage as a material breach and potential termination ground. Section 11.2 requires certificates on request, updated certificates when coverage is purchased, renewed or changed, and at least thirty days’ written notice before cancellation of a required policy. Compare that posted agreement with the version you actually accepted and any later addenda. Keep a renewal calendar for both the vehicle policy and the app documents so a payment or renewal problem is resolved before the next shift. A policy you intend to buy later is not current insurance. Nor should you cancel the personal policy merely because DoorDash describes an excess insurance program: its own Canadian summary expressly says Dashers must maintain primary auto insurance.

Evidence: Company-reported. Scope: CA-AB; Canadian contract/summary only. Local law, insurer permission, policy wording and platform availability require separate review. Checked 2026-10-26.

### Canadian Excess Liability Has Important Conditions

DoorDash’s international section, expressly including Canada, describes excess third-party auto liability during the defined Delivery Service period. It says consideration of cover requires that the Dasher be liable for another party’s injury or damage during that period and that a claim first be made under the Dasher’s own auto policy with a coverage-denial letter received. Treat this as the company’s published account of its Canadian excess program, subject to the actual policy. It does not establish first-dollar coverage for every claim, a particular provincial or territorial dollar limit, protection while merely waiting for an order, or payment for all activities with the app open. Preserve the order and app-status records needed to identify the period. Ask DoorDash or the insurer for the current applicable wording, insurer, limit, covered vehicles and reporting procedure. An excess-policy description does not replace the primary insurance and disclosure duties in the contractor agreement.

Evidence: Company-reported. Scope: CA-AB; Canadian contract/summary only. Local law, insurer permission, policy wording and platform availability require separate review. Checked 2026-10-26.

### DoorDash’s Liability Summary Does Not Insure Repairs to Your Car

The Canadian section expressly says damage to the Dasher’s own vehicle is the driver’s responsibility and should be addressed with the auto insurer. Its third-party liability description concerns injuries and damage owed to someone else. The Canadian occupational accident program is also injury protection, not vehicle-damage insurance. If you cause a collision while delivering and your car needs repairs, neither summary establishes a platform-funded collision benefit for that car. Ask your insurer about permitted delivery use under the physical-damage protection available for delivery use in your province or territory. Also ask about the deductible, valuation and loss-of-use protection before relying on the car for income. A document showing substantial liability coverage may still leave you with an uninsured repair bill. This distinction applies even when an accident involves a customer’s order: the presence of goods in the car does not turn liability to other people into protection for your own vehicle.

Evidence: Company-reported. Scope: CA-AB; Canadian contract/summary only. Local law, insurer permission, policy wording and platform availability require separate review. Checked 2026-10-26.

### Report App-Related Incidents Promptly and Cooperate

Section 11.4 of the posted agreement asks for notice to DoorDash or its carrier of an occurrence, dispute, incident or accident while logged in, or immediately before or after logging in or out, within forty-eight hours where practicable. It also requires cooperation with the insurer’s investigation of the event and surrounding moments. This contractual notice sits alongside your own insurer’s reporting requirements. Report accurately and promptly rather than waiting to find out who is ultimately responsible. Keep the incident time, order identifier, accepted and completed status, other active apps, vehicle details, photographs and the correspondence you receive. Do not manufacture a denial letter or describe a delivery as personal use to fit a hoped-for policy. A support ticket establishes that you contacted support; it is not itself a coverage decision or a waiver of the applicable insurance conditions.

Evidence: Company-reported. Scope: CA-AB; Canadian contract/summary only. Local law, insurer permission, policy wording and platform availability require separate review. Checked 2026-10-26.

## Damage to Your Car, DCPD and Non-Owned Vehicles

### DoorDash’s Liability Description Does Not Repair Your Car

DoorDash’s Canadian section puts damage to the Dasher’s own vehicle with the driver and the auto insurer. Alberta SPF1 separately addresses third-party liability, direct compensation for property damage, accident benefits and optional loss-or-damage cover. Ask which parts remain in force during the disclosed delivery use. Collision or upset and comprehensive are different protections, with purchased perils, deductibles and exclusions. A liability limit protecting against injury or damage owed to another person does not establish payment for your own repair bill. If you cause a delivery collision and have no applicable collision protection, a platform liability summary does not fill that gap. Also check the car’s valuation and any financing exposure; a repair or actual-cash-value payment is not necessarily the outstanding loan balance. Keep the declaration and relevant endorsements so the answer follows the actual insurance purchased.

### DCPD Uses Your Own Insurer Under Alberta’s Conditions

Alberta introduced direct compensation for property damage from January 1, 2022. Under Insurance Act §585.1 and the current SPF1 Section A.1, eligible damage is handled through the insured’s own insurer with recovery tied to the applicable fault allocation and conditions. The government’s collision guide explains that DCPD addresses the portion for which the driver is not at fault, while purchased collision can address the at-fault portion. DCPD does not apply to every collision: the insurance and undertaking requirements matter, including where another insurer is not licensed in Alberta. The policy may also have a DCPD deductible. Ask the adjuster which coverage applies and how responsibility was assessed. DoorDash’s excess third-party liability condition is a separate question from recovery for your own car through Alberta’s DCPD system. Neither the platform’s support response nor a police charge determines every insurance coverage issue.

### Read the SEF49(A) Warning Before Giving Up DCPD

Alberta’s March 2023 bulletin permits DCPD deletion endorsements across automobile classes when offered and accepted voluntarily. SEF49(A) warns that, where the statutory DCPD arrangement would apply, the insured will not recover the relevant not-at-fault vehicle, equipment, contents and loss-of-use damage from their insurer, the at-fault person or that person’s insurer. It also restricts corresponding all-perils or collision recovery to the stated extent and applies to the listed automobiles and temporary substitutes. This is a significant change in who funds a loss, not simply a harmless removal of duplicate cover. The form cautions leased or financed owners to consult the financing company and describes reinstatement by contacting the insurance representative and paying the required adjustment. Do not assume your policy retained DCPD, or that buying collision automatically reverses a signed deletion. Read the actual election and its effective date.

### Coverage for the Car Does Not Automatically Cover Delivery Goods

The current SPF1 DCPD wording refers to contents if they are not carried for reward, and its liability and physical-damage provisions contain their own property definitions and exclusions. That is a reason to ask specifically about customers’ orders, goods in your care, personal equipment and items belonging to someone else. Do not assume that a policy repairing the car also guarantees the value of every paid delivery inside it. DoorDash’s Canadian auto summary describes excess third-party auto liability, not a general cargo or goods guarantee. Explain what was damaged, who owned it and how the liability arose before deciding which policy or contractual process to investigate. A vehicle certificate, an occupational accident summary and an order receipt answer different questions. If you need protection for goods, ask for the actual applicable wording rather than inferring it from a general auto insurance label.

### A Rental or Borrowed Car Needs a Separate Review

SPF1’s extended-insured accident-benefit definitions contain specific other-automobile conditions, including commercial-delivery restrictions in the identified provisions. Do not read a clause about a particular other automobile as a blanket statement that the named car is always excluded, or that every benefit transfers to a rental. SEF27 is a separate non-owned-automobile damage-liability endorsement with specified insured persons, vehicle types or business, covered perils, limits, exclusions and owner-consent requirements. Its existence does not show that you purchased it, that a rental provider permits DoorDash, or that all liability and injury layers are in place. Before substituting a vehicle, obtain permission from the owner or rental company and the actual insurance documents for that vehicle, driver and delivery activity. Check deductibles, excluded vehicles, other-app use and reporting. A replacement-transportation payment after a covered loss does not itself authorize paid delivery in the replacement car.

### Passenger Permission Is Different from Food Delivery

Alberta SEF6(A) grants permission for the specified automobile to carry passengers for compensation or hire in the business described in the endorsement. It is not a universal endorsement for every form of app work. The current SPF1 also has a paying-passenger exclusion and stated exceptions that need to be read in their actual context. If you deliver food and also accept passenger trips, describe both activities and obtain the documents that apply to each, including any separate platform insurance. A permission covering one activity is not evidence for the other, and multiple advertised limits should not be added together without the applicable policy and other-insurance rules. The relevant question is what the vehicle and driver were doing at the time of loss. Keep each app’s acceptance, completion and logoff records so the insurer can apply the correct activity and coverage period.

## Auto Injury Benefits, DoorDash and WCB Status

### Current Auto Accident Benefits Have Their Own Conditions

The current 2022 SPF1 Section B sets out medical, rehabilitation, disability and other accident benefits with insured-person definitions, exclusions, limits, timing and coordination provisions. Alberta’s collision guidance describes the accident-benefits claim route, but the policy still determines the applicable entitlement. Do not confuse those benefits with repairs to the vehicle, a third-party liability claim, or lost delivery income caused only by the car being unavailable. The form also contains specific workers’ compensation-related exclusions for identified benefits, so tell the insurer about any workplace coverage or claim. Ask which forms, medical evidence and earnings records are required for your circumstances, and retain the written decision. A company’s private occupational accident summary does not replace the auto-policy analysis. In particular, the newer Care-First benefit wording should not be used to calculate a 2026 entitlement merely because it is already available on a government website.

### Review Family Protection for an Inadequately Insured Motorist

Alberta SEF44 family protection addresses eligible bodily-injury or death claims involving an inadequately insured motorist under its definitions, limits and coordination provisions. It is different from damage to the delivery car, the standard accident-benefit claim and DoorDash’s excess liability for injury or damage owed to another person. Ask whether the endorsement is included, what limit was purchased and who qualifies as an insured person during the disclosed delivery activity. The form has specific definitions for named insureds, dependants and business arrangements, so a vehicle supplied by a corporation can raise a different insured-person question from a personally owned car. A blank approved endorsement does not establish that you have the coverage or that it will pay the entire claimed loss. ### DoorDash Describes a Separate Canadian Injury Program

DoorDash’s Canadian occupational accident summary says its program began March 1, 2026 and describes eligible online and delivery activity, with exceptions for provinces where Dashers are covered by provincial workers’ compensation systems. Alberta is not one of the three provinces expressly named in that exception. The company reports income support at 85% of average weekly earnings, subject to a $500 weekly maximum, a $125 minimum for limited earnings history, a seven-day waiting period and up to a year of support. It also describes up to $100,000 of uncovered medical expenses after a $50 deductible. These are summary terms subject to the actual group policy, eligibility, exclusions, coordination and claims assessment. They do not establish your WCB status or an individual payout. Obtain the current policy through the stated insurer interface and keep earnings and claim records rather than assuming every benefit can be collected in full from every program.

### Do Not Import the U.S. Injury FAQ into Alberta

A DoorDash occupational accident FAQ available under a Canadian-language URL explicitly labels its body as applicable to U.S. Dashers only. Its U.S. medical maxima, deductibles, disability terms and claims arrangements are not evidence of Alberta benefits. Use the separate Canadian description for the stated country scope and then obtain the applicable group policy. Similarly, the Canadian auto-summary denial-letter condition should not be copied into every U.S. state’s auto coverage description. Identify the country, activity and accident date before relying on a number found in search results. The Canadian injury page also says the occupational accident program does not cover property damage. A damaged car or bicycle and an injured courier can therefore require different claims, evidence and insurance arrangements even when both losses arise from the same delivery incident.

### WCB Status Depends on More Than the Contractor Label

WCB-Alberta’s employer policy describes criteria for assessing worker or business-owner status, including direction and control, tools and equipment, the ability to hire, financial risk, investment and business infrastructure. Its worker policy and coverage guide distinguish covered industries from exempt industries or persons. DoorDash’s independent-contractor label and its private injury summary do not themselves decide that statutory analysis. Ask WCB which status and industry apply to the actual arrangement, including whether you are a deemed worker of a principal, an employer or a proprietor. Keep any written determination and the facts on which it relies. Do not import British Columbia’s particular platform-worker deeming legislation into Alberta, or tell every Alberta courier that WCB is always optional merely because they use their own car. The province’s actual status framework must be applied before deciding which statutory duties and coverages exist.

### Deemed-Worker Rules and Their Exceptions Matter

WCB Policy 06-01 Application 4 says contractors and subcontractors performing work for a principal in an industry to which the Workers’ Compensation Act applies are deemed workers of the principal, subject to listed exceptions. Those exceptions include specified workers of other employers, employers, corporate directors and certain proprietors or partners with personal coverage and the required business connection. Application 2 adds detail about proprietors and business status. The conditions matter: a driver should not select a preferred category from a label in an app agreement. If you hire another person or subcontract deliveries, ask about your own potential principal or employer obligations as well as your personal protection. WCB’s contractor guidance describes how business status and coverage affect reporting and premiums. A platform auto certificate and a private accident-benefit summary do not clear those separate statutory responsibilities.

### A WCB Account Does Not Automatically Protect the Business Owner

WCB’s personal-coverage policy identifies eligible owners and directors and says coverage protects the individual only while working in the industry for which it was approved. Its employer policy explains when proprietors may apply for personal coverage and how status affects protection. An account covering workers is not proof that a director or owner personally has that cover in force. Where WCB confirms that optional personal coverage is the appropriate route, ask about the approved industry, effective date, earnings basis and conditions before relying on it. WCB’s contractor guidance also explains the role of clearance letters identifying who is covered, the industry and whether the account is in good standing. If you engage others, obtain the relevant status and clearance information rather than treating a general business registration or insurance card as a substitute. Private DoorDash injury cover and WCB personal coverage remain separate arrangements to review.

## The January 2027 Transition

### The Posted2027 Forms Are Future Wording in This Review

Alberta’s September 18, 2026 Interpretation Bulletin 05-2026 announces standard-form amendments effective January 1, 2027, mainly for Care-First reform and other changes made at the same time. The government’s current automobile page still identifies the 2022 SPF1 separately from the future forms. That distinction matters when searching: a newly posted PDF may describe rules that do not yet govern a 2026 accident. For current delivery decisions, read the applicable issued policy and current legal framework. For a policy extending into 2027, ask the insurer to explain the transition and provide the documents that will apply from the new date. Do not treat the presence of a future form as evidence that a current benefit has already changed, or use its expanded or revised definitions to approve a 2026 claim. This guide identifies the transition without substituting a future entitlement calculation for present coverage.

### The Transition Is Not Simply Deferred Until Your Next Renewal

Bulletin 05-2026 says the standard-form amendments apply automatically to in-force motor-vehicle liability policies effective January 1, 2027. It also identifies a specific exception: the deductible waiver for fire, lightning and total-theft losses remains on policies in force on December 31, 2026 until expiry or termination, whichever comes first. Insurers must use the amended transaction documents according to the bulletin’s implementation and grace-period rules. Ask which changes affect an existing policy spanning the transition instead of assuming all terms stay unchanged until the annual renewal. Keep both the current certificate and the subsequent documents, and identify the date of the accident or loss when discussing a claim. None of this establishes a new DoorDash excess-auto limit or automatic acceptance of delivery use. The vehicle’s declared activity and the particular coverage still need to match the policy being relied upon.

## Claims, Different Vehicles and Disputes

### Report to the Auto Insurer and DoorDash Separately

Alberta’s collision guidance says to advise the insurer as soon as possible, regardless of which driver was at fault, and give complete accident and injury details. SPF1’s statutory conditions contain the applicable written-notice, cooperation and proof requirements; for vehicle loss or damage, the identified condition also calls for a statutory declaration within 90 days. DoorDash’s posted contract has its separate forty-eight-hour-where-practicable incident notice provision. Treat those as distinct obligations rather than assuming a support ticket completes an auto claim. Preserve the order record, app periods, other active apps, driver and vehicle details, photographs and correspondence. If you seek the Canadian excess-auto program, follow its stated route and retain the personal-policy coverage decision. Do not misdescribe delivery as personal use to obtain a hoped-for result, or wait for one coverage dispute to finish before notifying another relevant insurer.

### A Valuation Dispute Uses the Applicable Statutory Process

Insurance Act §519 provides a dispute-resolution process for matters required by the stated statutory or contractual condition to use that process. It describes representatives, an umpire, determinations and allocation of expenses. The Superintendent’s umpire instructions explain the circumstances and information needed when an appointment is requested. That procedure should not be presented as a universal way to resolve every disagreement about policy interpretation, legal liability or whether an activity is insured. Identify the actual disputed question and the relevant policy provision first. Keep the proof of loss, estimates, valuation evidence and written decision. Ask about the applicable procedure and deadlines promptly; a general complaint and a formal statutory request are different actions. If you are contesting the quality of a repair, the government’s collision guidance also distinguishes responsibilities involving the repair shop from the insurer’s coverage decision.

### A Complaint or Mediation Does Not Guarantee a Claim Payment

Alberta’s consumer-complaint guidance directs the insured through the insurer’s complaint process and company ombudsperson, with an independent ombudservice available for the relevant insurance type. For general auto insurance it identifies the General Insurance OmbudService. The guidance says the independent service can mediate concerns but cannot order settlement of a claim or provide a legal opinion about coverage. Keep the policy, letters, conversations and the outcome requested in an organized complaint file. If a private occupational accident policy is involved, identify its actual insurer and the appropriate complaint route separately from the vehicle insurer. Do not assume DoorDash support can overturn an insurer’s decision, or that starting a complaint preserves every limitation period. Seek timely advice on the actual dispute, forum and deadline where the published process does not answer the question.

### An E-Bike Is Not Established by a Car-Policy Result

Alberta’s road legislation treats power bicycles as a distinct defined category. The Vehicle Equipment Regulation refers to the Use of Highway and Rules of the Road definition, while §9 of the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation has specific age and consent rules for power-bicycle operation. A device advertised as an e-bike is not enough information to decide its actual legal class, especially after modifications. Check its specifications and the current rules before assuming the car licensing, registration or insurance answer transfers to it. Then confirm the delivery mode permitted by the platform and what liability, injury and equipment protection applies to that mode. DoorDash’s Canadian occupational accident page says it does not cover property damage, so it does not establish replacement of a damaged bicycle or battery. A road-use classification and an insurance entitlement are separate questions.

### Resolve the Insurance Questions Before the Next Shift

For an Alberta DoorDash car courier, retain written acceptance of the disclosed delivery use, the correct vehicle and drivers, liability limits and the current certificate. Decide how the car is protected against damage, check whether DCPD was retained or deleted, and obtain the actual deductibles and endorsements. Resolve non-owned-vehicle and passenger-app permissions separately. Establish the relevant WCB status and any approved personal coverage rather than relying on the contractor label, and obtain the Canadian private injury policy if applicable. Keep the January 2027 transition on the renewal checklist with the bulletin’s effective-date distinctions. Finally, request the current DoorDash excess-auto wording where the public Canadian summary leaves a limit or definition unresolved. The research identifies those missing policy details rather than replacing them with U.S. amounts or another province’s scheme. If the existing insurer cannot accept the work, arrange an appropriate alternative before relying on that policy for deliveries.
