# Trucking Insurance in New Jersey

New Jersey requires at least $300,000 in combined liability for a commercial motor vehicle with a 10,001–26,000-pound GVWR and $1.5 million for a heavier commercial motor vehicle. The limits have applied to policies initiated or renewed since July 1, 2024, and the state allows commercial auto, fleet, umbrella, or excess coverage in combination to meet them.[^1][^2]

## What Is Trucking?

Trucking coverage can address liability, damage to your trucks and cargo losses, but one quote may not include all three. If you haul goods for customers or yourself, compare those protections and check whether the quote needs motor-carrier or other commercial auto coverage. [Read the national Trucking guide](/coverage/trucking).

## New Jersey Requirements

| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Commercial motor vehicle, 10,001–26,000 lb GVWR | $300,000 combined single limit for bodily injury, death, or property damage per accident[^1][^2] |
| Commercial motor vehicle, 26,001 lb GVWR or more | $1,500,000 combined single limit for bodily injury, death, or property damage per accident[^1][^2] |

## What to Watch for in New Jersey

### Check the GVWR Cutoff on Each Power Unit

New Jersey sets a $300,000 combined limit for commercial motor vehicles from 10,001 to 26,000 pounds and $1.5 million at 26,001 pounds or more. Ask the agent to use each vehicle's rated weight, not the current load, because that cutoff changes the required limit by $1.2 million.[^1][^2]

### Review Policies Renewed Since July 2024

New Jersey's higher commercial-vehicle limits took effect July 1, 2024 and apply to policies initiated or renewed after that date. If a fleet policy renewed since then, compare its declarations and endorsements with the current GVWR-based limits instead of relying on an older certificate.[^2]

### Ask How Primary and Excess Limits Combine

New Jersey lets an insured meet the required limit through commercial auto, fleet, commercial umbrella, excess, similar policies, or a combination. Request written confirmation of the total applicable limit and any attachment point so you can see whether primary and excess coverage together meet the state minimum.[^1][^2]

### Separate New Jersey Limits From FMCSA Filings

FMCSA lists $750,000 for interstate for-hire carriers hauling nonhazardous property at 10,001 pounds or more, while New Jersey requires $1.5 million for its commercial motor vehicles at 26,001 pounds or more. Confirm which state and federal operating authorities your routes use; one certificate may need to satisfy both sets of obligations.[^1][^2][^3]

## Who Regulates Insurance in New Jersey

**New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.** New Jersey DOBI licenses insurers and producers, reviews insurance products and rates, monitors insurer solvency and responds to insurance complaints. The Property and Casualty unit regulates commercial and personal property and casualty rates, rules and forms.[^4][^5][^6][^7]

### Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office

**Reported tax rate:** 5% of gross premium, less return premium New Jersey’s Department of Banking and Insurance states a 5% surplus-lines tax for policies effective on or after July 1, 2009; its FAQ also describes direct-procurement tax filing for premium allocated to New Jersey. A New Jersey surplus-lines producer generally must make a diligent effort to place the risk with authorized insurers, subject to the exportable-list and other statutory exceptions. New Jersey’s separate surplus-lines guaranty fund has narrow coverage; ordinary commercial surplus-lines claims are generally outside guaranty protection.[^8][^9][^10]

## Providers With Documented State Licenses

No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. [Check the regulator’s license lookup](https://www.nj.gov/dobi/inslic.htm) and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.

## Questions to Ask Before You Buy in New Jersey

1. What is each truck’s GVWR, and does it fall below or above New Jersey’s 26,001-pound limit tier?
2. Do the limits on our current policy reflect New Jersey’s rules for policies renewed after July 1, 2024?
3. Can our commercial auto and umbrella or excess policies be combined to meet the applicable New Jersey minimum?
4. For our interstate routes, how does the policy also satisfy the FMCSA minimum for our carrier type and freight?
