# Trucking Insurance in Nevada

Nevada general-freight carriers need liability limits tied to vehicle weight: $300,000 for 10,001–26,000 pounds and $750,000 for 26,001–80,000 pounds, with cargo excluded from those property-damage limits. Before the DMV issues written approval, common and contract carriers must submit an Accord certificate and insurer-filed Form E for each vehicle; hazardous-material limits can be higher.[^1][^2][^3]

## What Is Trucking?

Trucking coverage can address liability, damage to your trucks and cargo losses, but one quote may not include all three. If you haul goods for customers or yourself, compare those protections and check whether the quote needs motor-carrier or other commercial auto coverage. [Read the national Trucking guide](/coverage/trucking).

## Nevada Requirements

| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Freight liability, 10,001–26,000 lb vehicles | $300,000 per person / $300,000 per accident / $300,000 property damage excluding cargo; single combined limit permitted[^1][^2] |
| Freight liability, 26,001–80,000 lb vehicles | $750,000 per person / $750,000 per accident / $750,000 property damage excluding cargo; single combined limit permitted[^1][^2] |
| Cargo liability | $15,000 for property carried on one vehicle / $30,000 for losses at one time and place or aggregate[^2] |
| Hazardous commodities | Apply the federal minimums referenced in 49 CFR § 387.303; limits depend on commodity and operation[^2] |

## What to Watch for in Nevada

### Rate Every Truck Into the Correct Weight Tier

Nevada's general-freight limits change at 26,001 pounds: the state schedule lists $300,000 per person, accident, and property-damage claim for 10,001–26,000-pound vehicles and $750,000 for 26,001–80,000-pound vehicles. Have the broker check each unit's gross vehicle weight rating and confirm the liability limit follows the right tier.[^1][^2]

### Separate Cargo Limits From Liability Limits

The Nevada liability schedule excludes cargo, and the state rule separately sets $15,000 for goods carried on one vehicle and $30,000 for losses at one time and place or aggregate. Confirm both forms are filed and compare the cargo amount and exclusions with your actual loads; bodily-injury and property-damage liability does not insure freight value.[^1][^2]

### Use the Right Nevada Authority Path

Nevada DMV says general-freight authority is handled during DMV registration, while household-goods movers and fully regulated carriers apply to the Nevada Transportation Authority. The DMV's application also excludes apportioned-plate vehicles from its written-authority filing path, so confirm your carrier classification and registration type before asking an insurer to file Form E.[^3][^1]

### Recheck Limits for Hazardous Freight

Nevada's DMV guide says carriers authorized to move hazardous substances, oil, certain explosives, poisonous gas, or radioactive materials must use higher limits in NAC 706.288. Disclose each commodity and placarding status so the agent can check the applicable schedule rather than quoting the ordinary freight tier.[^1][^2]

### Match Form E to Each Listed Vehicle

Nevada requires evidence for each vehicle on Form E before it issues written approval, and the application says the name must match the registration and insurance certificate. Check the business name, unit schedule, and license plates across the filing packet; a missing or mismatched vehicle can delay authority.[^2][^1]

## Who Regulates Insurance in Nevada

**Nevada Division of Insurance.** The Nevada Division of Insurance regulates insurers and producers and provides a license verification tool for agents, agencies and companies. Its Consumer Services unit accepts insurance complaints and questions.[^4][^5][^6]

### Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office

**Reported tax rate:** Same tax rate as admitted coverage of the same kind; an approved filing fee may also apply When Nevada is the insured’s home state, Nevada taxes surplus-lines coverage at the rate imposed on similar admitted coverage and adds any approved filing fee; the rate therefore depends on the line and applicable fee approval. Nevada law requires a diligent effort to place coverage with authorized insurers except where the statutory exempt-commercial-purchaser conditions apply, and the policy must warn that the Nevada Insurance Guaranty Association will not cover the contract.[^7][^8][^9][^10]

## Providers With Documented State Licenses

No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. [Check the regulator’s license lookup](https://doi.nv.gov/licensing-search/) and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.

## Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Nevada

1. Which Nevada authority applies to our operation: DMV general-freight registration or Transportation Authority household-goods authority?
2. What is each truck’s gross vehicle weight rating, and does the quote use Nevada’s $300,000 or $750,000 liability tier?
3. Are cargo limits separately filed at $15,000 per vehicle and $30,000 per time and place, and do they fit our loads?
4. Has the insurer submitted Form E for every truck under the exact name on our Nevada registration?
5. Do our commodities trigger the higher limits for hazardous materials under NAC 706.288 or 49 CFR § 387.303?

## Trucking in Nevada: FAQ

### What liability limits does Nevada require for intrastate freight trucks?

For general-freight carriers, Nevada lists $300,000 for 10,001–26,000-pound vehicles and $750,000 for 26,001–80,000-pound vehicles for bodily injury and property damage excluding cargo. The state permits any of those amounts to be a single combined limit.[^1][^2]

### Does a Nevada intrastate freight carrier need to file Form E?

Yes. Common and contract property carriers must file evidence for each vehicle, including an insurer-submitted Form E, before the DMV issues written approval, unless an application exception applies.[^2][^1]
