# Professional Liability (E&O) Insurance in Rhode Island

Rhode Island requires every licensed home inspector and associate home inspector to file E&O and general-liability certificates, each with at least $500,000 in aggregate coverage. A qualifying company policy may cover the individual, but the licensee must be specifically covered and cancellation or nonrenewal requires at least 10 days’ written notice to the board.[^1]

**Coverage:** [Professional errors and omissions (E&O)](/coverage/professional-errors-omissions) · [Rhode Island](/coverage/states/rhode-island)

## What Is Professional Errors And Omissions (E&O)?

Professional liability can help pay defense costs and covered losses when a client says your advice or service caused financial harm. If customers rely on your work, list every service you provide and check the claims-made reporting and prior-work terms. [Read the national Professional errors and omissions (E&O) guide](/coverage/professional-errors-omissions).

## Rhode Island Requirements

| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Home Inspector and Associate E&O | At least $500,000 aggregate[^1] |
| Home Inspector and Associate General Liability | At least $500,000 aggregate[^1] |

## What to Watch for in Rhode Island

### Check Whether a Company Policy Specifically Covers You

Rhode Island accepts insurance carried by the corporation, partnership, or franchise that employs the inspector as a contractor only if the inspector or associate is specifically covered. Ask for the policy evidence that names the person and confirm the certificates are filed with the board.[^1][^2]

### Build in the Board’s Ten-Day Notice

A filed E&O or general-liability proof is ineffective unless the policy provides that it cannot be cancelled until at least 10 days after the board receives written notice of intended cancellation or nonrenewal. Ask the carrier to confirm that clause before filing the certificate.[^1]

### Price the Work You Actually Perform

Rhode Island’s standards say home inspections are visual, not technically exhaustive, and are not architectural or engineering studies. If your business sells optional technical services that require other licenses, ask the broker to confirm those separate services are described and covered.[^2]

## Who Regulates Insurance in Rhode Island

**Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation, Insurance Division.** The DBR Insurance Division provides an online public verification service for producers, adjusters, surplus-lines brokers, and other licensees, and accepts insurance complaints online. Contact the Division for help determining whether it has authority over a particular policy or dispute.[^3][^4][^5]

### Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office

**Reported tax rate:** 4% of net taxable premium; 2018 filing guide excludes listed broker, carrier and inspection fees Rhode Island’s 2024 return applies 4% to net taxable premium (gross premium less returned premium); its 2018 filing guide excludes broker, carrier, and inspection fees from the base. Confirm fee treatment with the Division of Taxation if your bill separates those charges, because no newer official fee-base guidance was located.[^6][^7]

## Providers With Documented State Licenses

These providers publish a national listing for Professional errors and omissions (E&O); the state records document licenses for the entities and roles shown below. Some records rely on company-reported information rather than independent regulator verification. A national listing does not confirm that the product is available in Rhode Island; [check the regulator’s license lookup](https://dbr.ri.gov/insurance-banking-securities-and-charitable-organizations/insurance/consumers/license-status) and confirm state availability for your business when requesting a quote.

- [At-Bay](/insurance-providers/at-bay) — **Entity:** At-Bay Insurance Services LLC; **role:** Insurance producer, Surplus-lines broker; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** At-Bay’s license page lists P&C producer and surplus-lines broker license numbers for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. These are company disclosures and do not establish product availability in each jurisdiction.[^8]
- [Coalition](/insurance-providers/coalition) — **Entity:** Coalition Insurance Solutions, Inc.; **role:** Insurance producer, Surplus-lines broker; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** Coalition’s license page lists producer and surplus-lines licenses for Coalition Insurance Solutions, Inc. in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The page separately lists insurers; this record covers the brokerage entity only.[^9]
- [Corgi](/insurance-providers/corgi) — **Entity:** Corgi Insurance Services, Inc.; **role:** Insurance producer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** Corgi’s company producer-license table lists 50 jurisdictions: 49 states and the District of Columbia, including DC license 3003091619. New Mexico does not appear in the table and is not included here; the omission does not establish that Corgi is unlicensed there. The company-reported table has no stated as-of date and does not establish product availability.[^10]
- [ERGO NEXT Insurance](/insurance-providers/next-insurance) — **Entity:** Next First Insurance Agency, Inc.; **role:** Insurance producer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** ERGO NEXT’s current license table lists Next First Insurance Agency, Inc. in 50 jurisdictions, including Washington, DC; New York is excluded because its table rows name Next Insurance Services and AP Intego, not Next First. The table is company-reported; it does not establish product availability or provide state-regulator verification for each entry.[^12]
- [Hiscox](/insurance-providers/hiscox) — **Entity:** Hiscox Insurance Company Inc.; **role:** Insurer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** Hiscox’s U.S. company information states that Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This is company-reported insurer authority for this entity and does not establish which company issues every Hiscox-branded product.[^11]
- [Vouch](/insurance-providers/vouch) — **Entity:** Vouch Specialty Insurance Services, LLC; **role:** Insurance producer, Surplus-lines broker; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** Vouch’s licenses page, effective January 16, 2025, lists producer licenses in all 50 states and DC. Its separate surplus-lines table includes Idaho number 870820, while a footnote says Georgia and Idaho do not issue agency-level surplus-lines licenses. Because those statements conflict for Idaho, this record keeps Idaho producer-only and does not treat the table number as established agency surplus-lines authority. The page is company-reported and does not establish product availability.[^13]
