# Inland Marine Insurance in Alaska

Alaska's Division of Insurance describes inland marine as a way to consider property that a traditional property policy may not offer, including heavy equipment, snowmachines, drones, and some jewelry or artwork. These examples are prompts for a quote, not a promise that Alaska law or a policy covers every such item. Tell the agent how each asset is used, where it stays, and how it moves between shop, trail, worksite, and storage; compare any scheduled inland-marine terms with the standard property policy so you can see which form responds.[^1][^2]

**Coverage:** [Tools, equipment and inland marine](/coverage/inland-marine) · [Alaska](/coverage/states/alaska)

## What Is Tools, Equipment And Inland Marine?

If your business moves equipment between sites or ships goods, inland marine can cover those property exposures; installation and other forms address different property categories. Match the quote to what you own, rent or hold for others. [Read the national Tools, equipment and inland marine guide](/coverage/inland-marine).

## What to Watch for in Alaska

### Describe where and how snowmachines work

Alaska's Division of Insurance lists snowmachines as an inland-marine example. Give the insurer the unit's value, usual locations, commercial or personal use, trail and road movement, and storage conditions; ask for the covered-property wording and any use or territory restrictions.[^1]

### Check both the shop and the trip

The Division's examples include heavy equipment and drones. Ask whether your form applies while operating, parked at a remote worksite, loaded for transport, and temporarily stored, and whether one event or one item has a separate limit.[^1]

### Coordinate business and household policies

The Division mentions jewelry or artwork that a homeowners policy does not cover as an inland-marine example. If an item serves both business and personal purposes, show both policies to the agent and ask which one is intended to insure it and whether the descriptions overlap.[^1]

### Check who is quoting the risk

Use the Alaska Division of Insurance's company and agent research tools to check the insurer and producer behind the quote. That lookup helps verify the market participant; the policy wording still determines insured property and losses.[^2]

## Who Regulates Insurance in Alaska

**Alaska Division of Insurance.** The Alaska Division of Insurance regulates insurers and insurance licensees, provides company and licensee searches, and investigates insurance complaints within its authority. Its consumer-services section handles disputes involving claims, cancellations, premium refunds, agents, and insurers.[^3][^4][^5]

### Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office

**Reported tax rate:** 2.7% of gross premium less returns plus 1% filing fee; wet marine: 0.75%, no fee For covered property and casualty surplus-lines risks, Alaska lists a 2.7% tax and a separate 1% filing fee on gross premium less returned premium. Qualifying wet-marine and transportation policies instead carry a 0.75% tax on gross premium and no filing fee; risks of state or local government and certain interstate aircraft are exempt from both tax and fee. A multistate placement is regulated under the insured’s home-state rules, and Alaska says to evaluate each policy’s home state separately.[^7][^6][^8][^9]

**Alaska has a placement-list exception:** If a risk appears on Alaska’s surplus-lines placement list, the Division says the broker does not have to canvass admitted insurers for declinations before placement; the broker must document the applicable list entry.[^6]

**Alaska has limited tax and search exceptions:** The Division says qualifying wet-marine and transportation policies need no diligent search and pay no 1% filing fee. Tax and filing fees also do not apply to state or political-subdivision risks or qualifying interstate aircraft, although other placement requirements remain.[^10]

## Providers With Documented State Licenses

These providers publish a national listing for Tools, equipment and inland marine; the state records document licenses for the entities and roles shown below. Some records rely on company-reported information rather than independent regulator verification. A national listing does not confirm that the product is available in Alaska; [check the regulator’s license lookup](https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/ins/Consumers/ConsumerTools/ResearchaCompany.aspx) and confirm state availability for your business when requesting a quote.

- [TechInsurance](/insurance-providers/techinsurance) — **Entity:** Specialty Program Group LLC; **role:** Insurance producer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** TechInsurance’s current licensing page names Specialty Program Group LLC / SPG Insurance Solutions and lists state license numbers, but labels Rhode Island “Individual licenses” rather than identifying a license for the named agency. RI is omitted because this disclosure does not establish agency authority there; this is a search limitation, not an assertion that the company is unlicensed. The remaining state entries are company-reported and are not an insurance product availability map.[^16]

## Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Alaska

1. Are my snowmachines, heavy equipment, drones, and removable attachments shown on the policy or otherwise within its covered-property wording?
2. Does protection apply while equipment is operated, parked at a remote site, transported, or temporarily stored, and what territory limits apply?
3. What theft, unattended-vehicle, mechanical-breakdown, water, and wear exclusions or conditions apply?
4. Are jewelry, artwork, or mixed personal and business property insured by this form, my homeowners policy, or neither?
5. Which insurer and producer are responsible for the quote, and how can I verify both with the Division?

## Tools, Equipment And Inland Marine in Alaska: FAQ

### Does the Division's list mean every snowmachine is automatically insured?

No. The Division's list gives examples of property buyers may discuss for inland-marine coverage. The policy's insured-property wording, schedule, covered causes of loss, exclusions, limits, and conditions control.[^1]

### Can one policy cover a work snowmachine and my personal snowmachine?

Possibly, but the Division's example does not decide how a carrier will cover your particular use. Give the agent both units' uses and locations and ask how the quote separates business and personal property.[^1]
