# Equipment Breakdown Insurance in Oklahoma

Oklahoma's boiler act, in the Department of Labor compilation current as of July 11, 2025, requires an annual internal inspection of power boilers and high-pressure, high-temperature water boilers where construction permits, plus an annual external inspection. Hot-water heating and supply boilers are inspected externally every year, with an internal inspection at the inspector's discretion. An authorized inspection agency can supply special inspectors only if it writes boiler and pressure vessel insurance in Oklahoma.[^1][^3][^2]

## What Is Equipment Breakdown?

Equipment-breakdown coverage can help repair covered machinery or building equipment after a mechanical or electrical failure. It fits businesses that depend on equipment to operate; check whether lost income, spoilage and utility failures are included. [Read the national Equipment breakdown guide](/coverage/equipment-breakdown).

## Oklahoma Requirements

| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Power-boiler inspection | Annual internal inspection where construction permits, and an annual external inspection, preferably under pressure.[^1] |
| Hot-water boiler inspection | External inspection annually. Internal inspection is at the inspector's discretion.[^1] |
| Corrosive pressure vessels | Internal inspection every three years where construction permits. API pressure-vessel-code vessels are excluded from that sentence.[^1] |

## What to Watch for in Oklahoma

### Three Heater Limits Decide the Exemption

A directly fired hot-water supply boiler is outside the act only when heat input stays at or below 200,000 Btu per hour, water temperature stays at or below 210°F, and water capacity stays at or below 120 gallons. Pressure vessels at or below 15 psig are also outside the act. Crossing any one heater limit puts the object back under inspection. A breakdown policy can still cover an exempt heater.[^1]

### Small Apartments Drop Out of the Certificate Sections

Low-pressure steam boilers, hot-water heating and supply boilers, hot-water supply heaters, and pressure vessels in a private residence or an apartment house of fewer than six family units are exempt from the inspection, certificate, and fee sections. The exemption is about occupancy, not about whether the equipment should be on a breakdown schedule.[^1]

### The Inspection Agency Must Be Writing Coverage Here

Certificates of competency for special inspectors are issued on request of an authorized inspection agency that provides boiler and pressure vessel insurance and is actively writing that coverage in Oklahoma. Those inspectors may inspect objects insured by their agency. If you do not buy that coverage, a Department inspector performs the inspection.[^1][^3]

### Operating Without a Certificate Is a Daily Offense

After the act's phase-in periods, it is unlawful to operate a covered boiler or pressure vessel without a valid certificate of operation. Each day of operation without the certificate, or above the pressure on it, is a misdemeanor. The policy does not take the place of that certificate.[^1]

## Who Regulates Insurance in Oklahoma

**Oklahoma Insurance Department.** OID's Licensing Division oversees new and renewed producer, adjuster, and business-entity licenses. Its consumer assistance process takes insurance complaints and requests for help; the licensee lookup displays license status and expiration.[^4][^5][^6]

### Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office

**Reported tax rate:** 6% of premium and fees, plus 0.175% SLAS transaction fee For Oklahoma-home-state placements, OID says the 6% surplus-lines tax base includes premium and fees; SLIP also bills a 0.175% SLAS transaction fee. Oklahoma law requires a policy notice that surplus-lines coverage has no guaranty-association protection, so ask your broker to itemize the tax and transaction fee.[^7][^8][^9]

## Providers With Documented State Licenses

No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. [Check the regulator’s license lookup](https://www.oid.ok.gov/licensing-and-education/licensee-look-up/) and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.

## Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Oklahoma

1. For each heater, are heat input, water temperature, and capacity all at or under the 200,000 Btu, 210°F, and 120-gallon limits?
2. Which vessels are subject to internal corrosion, and which are in the API pressure-vessel code and therefore outside the three-year sentence?
3. Does the inspection agency actually write boiler and pressure vessel coverage in Oklahoma for the objects it will inspect?
4. What repair and business-interruption terms apply if a covered object is shut down for the internal inspection?

## Equipment Breakdown in Oklahoma: FAQ

### Must an Oklahoma business buy equipment-breakdown insurance to get a boiler inspection?

No. Special inspectors come from an agency that writes this coverage in the state, and they inspect objects that agency insures. Without that policy, the Department of Labor inspects.[^1][^3]

### Does every hot-water heating boiler need an internal inspection each year?

No. Hot-water heating and hot-water supply boilers receive an external inspection annually. An internal inspection is at the inspector's discretion.[^1]
