# Equipment Breakdown Insurance in Missouri

Missouri lets authorized boiler insurers use state-commissioned special inspectors, and a certificate based on a special inspector’s report stops being valid when that unit ceases to be insured by an authorized company. Confirm the certificate and inspection arrangement during an insurance change; this safety rule neither requires equipment-breakdown insurance nor decides whether damage or downtime is covered.[^1][^2][^3]

## What Is Equipment Breakdown?

Equipment-breakdown coverage can help repair covered machinery or building equipment after a mechanical or electrical failure. It fits businesses that depend on equipment to operate; check whether lost income, spoilage and utility failures are included. [Read the national Equipment breakdown guide](/coverage/equipment-breakdown).

## What to Watch for in Missouri

### Check the certificate issuer before changing boiler insurers

Missouri allows a state-commissioned special inspector to inspect boilers insured by the insurer, and the resulting inspection certificate is not valid after that boiler or pressure vessel ceases to be insured by a company authorized in Missouri. This condition applies to certificates based on a special inspector’s report, not every certificate. Before a policy transition, identify the inspector and certificate, then ask the outgoing and incoming carriers who will report the next inspection and maintain operating authority.[^1][^2]

### Set separate calendar dates for boilers and pressure vessels

Missouri requires annual certificate inspections for power boilers and high-pressure, high-temperature water boilers. Low-pressure steam, hot-water heating, and hot-water supply boilers, plus pressure vessels subject to internal corrosion, generally have biennial inspections. The law allows a two-month grace period and lets the board authorize longer intervals. Maintain the applicable due date and current certificate for each scheduled unit rather than assuming one date covers all machinery.[^3]

### Do not treat every small pressure vessel as subject to the same inspection law

Missouri’s chapter excludes specified vessels, including some under federal or other-agency jurisdiction, certain small pressure vessels, and boilers or vessels on farms used solely for agriculture. The statute separately exempts some units only from inspection and fee sections, so an exemption from one inspection procedure is not necessarily an exemption from the entire chapter. Have the boiler authority classify a borderline machine, then separately tell the broker which equipment needs insurance.[^4]

### Keep inspection evidence separate from the policy’s loss terms

Missouri’s certificate reports inspection compliance and the maximum pressure at which the unit may operate; it does not state what an insurance policy will pay. Ask the broker to identify listed equipment and confirm the actual triggers, exclusions, deductibles, repair valuation, business-income waiting period and restoration limit in the proposed wording.[^2]

## Who Regulates Insurance in Missouri

**Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance.** Missouri DCI licenses insurance producers and insurers, reviews property and casualty rates and forms, and investigates complaints against insurance companies and producers.[^5][^6][^7][^8]

### Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office

**Reported tax rate:** 5% of premium; Missouri taxes the entire gross premium when Missouri is the home state When Missouri is the insured’s home state, the state applies its 5% surplus-lines tax to the entire gross premium of a multistate policy; the regulator’s FAQ says the tax includes applicable fees. Eligible nonadmitted insurers do not participate in the Missouri Guaranty Fund, and Missouri generally requires the full amount or kind of coverage to be unavailable from admitted insurers before placement; an exempt commercial purchaser search exception has separate disclosure and written-request conditions.[^9][^10][^11][^12]

## Providers With Documented State Licenses

No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. [Check the regulator’s license lookup](https://insurance.mo.gov/companies/find-insurance-agentagency) and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.

## Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Missouri

1. Is each critical boiler or pressure vessel operating under a certificate issued from a state-commissioned special inspector, and what happens to it during an insurer change?
2. Which Missouri annual or biennial inspection date applies to each unit, and has the board approved a longer interval?
3. Does the policy schedule identify the equipment whose failure could stop production, and what physical-damage and interruption terms apply to each loss scenario?

## Equipment Breakdown in Missouri: FAQ

### Does Missouri require every business to buy equipment-breakdown insurance?

The cited boiler chapter sets construction, inspection, and operating-certificate rules. It allows insurers to commission special inspectors and conditions the validity of certificates based on their reports on continued insurance, but it does not state that every business must buy an equipment-breakdown policy.[^1][^2]

### Does a current Missouri boiler certificate prove an equipment-breakdown claim is covered?

No. The statute describes the inspection report and operating-pressure certificate; policy coverage depends on the issued contract, covered equipment, cause of damage, exclusions, limits, and any business-income terms.[^2]
