# Commercial Auto Insurance in Washington

Washington UTC-regulated common carriers file liability by GVWR: $300,000 for vehicles under 10,000 pounds and $750,000 at 10,000 pounds or more for nonhazardous property. Household-goods carriers need a separate cargo filing of $10,000 below 10,000 pounds GVWR or $20,000 at or above 10,000 pounds; these carrier rules replace the ordinary mandatory-insurance chapter for covered UTC carriers.[^3][^5][^1]

**Coverage:** [Commercial auto](/coverage/commercial-auto) · [Washington](/coverage/states/washington)

## What Is Commercial Auto?

Commercial auto suits businesses that use vehicles for work and need liability protection; damage to your own vehicles is a separate coverage choice. If employees drive personal or rented cars, check how those trips are handled. [Read the national Commercial auto guide](/coverage/commercial-auto).

## Washington Requirements

| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Registered vehicles outside the UTC common/contract-carrier exception | $25,000 one person / $50,000 two or more / $10,000 property damage, or an authorized security alternative[^1][^2] |
| UTC common-carrier property liability filing | Nonhazardous property: $300,000 below 10,000 lb GVWR / $750,000 at 10,000 lb GVWR or more; listed hazardous materials have higher schedules[^3] |
| Household-goods permit cargo insurance | $10,000 below 10,000 lb GVWR / $20,000 at 10,000 lb GVWR or more[^5] |

## What to Watch for in Washington

### Use The UTC Carrier Filing Instead Of The General Proof Rule

Washington’s mandatory-insurance chapter expressly excludes vehicles governed by RCW 46.16A.170 or registered with UTC as common or contract carriers. A UTC carrier should match the vehicle and authority class to its WAC filing schedule rather than treating the ordinary $25,000/$50,000/$10,000 rule as its complete filing requirement.[^1][^3]

### Keep The Form E Or Form G Filing Continuous

Common carriers must file Form E, Form G, or a binder of no more than 60 days; the insurer must file Form K at least 30 days before cancellation or expiration. Replacement proof is due at least 10 days before the current policy ends, so schedule renewal before the certificate lapses.[^3]

### Identify The Commodity And Tank Or Bulk Configuration

Washington’s $1 million and $5 million common-carrier filings depend on the listed hazardous materials and how they are carried; the rule separates tank or hopper capacity and bulk categories. Give the insurer the exact commodity, packaging, and vehicle configuration before it selects the filing amount.[^3]

### A 10,000-Pound Vehicle Sits In Different Cargo And Liability Tiers

For a household-goods permit, exactly 10,000 pounds GVWR is in the $750,000 liability tier and the $20,000 cargo tier; below 10,000 pounds, the figures are $300,000 and $10,000. Check manufacturer GVWR rather than rounding the unit down from its registration label.[^4][^5]

## Who Regulates Insurance in Washington

**Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner.** The Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner administers Washington insurance laws, oversees insurers and insurance producers within its authority, and provides regulatory and consumer resources. You can use the department's complaint process to raise an insurance issue and its licensing resources to check insurance professionals.[^6][^7][^8]

- [License lookup](https://nipr.com/licensing-center)
- [File a complaint](https://content.naic.org/state-insurance-departments)

### Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office

**Reported tax rate:** 2% of premium The NAIC's state chart lists a 2% of premium charge for surplus-lines coverage for Washington (the chart's state entries were reviewed in October 2025). Your broker may collect the applicable amount with the premium. Surplus-lines insurers are not licensed in the state and generally are outside state guaranty-association protection; ask your broker to explain the insurer's financial protections and any diligent-search requirement that applies to your placement.[^9][^10]

## Providers With Documented State Licenses

These providers publish a national listing for Commercial auto; the state records document licenses for the entities and roles shown below. Some records rely on company-reported information rather than independent regulator verification. A national listing does not confirm that the product is available in Washington; [check the regulator’s license lookup](https://nipr.com/licensing-center) and confirm state availability for your business when requesting a quote.

- [Corgi](/insurance-providers/corgi) — **Entity:** Corgi Insurance Services, Inc.; **role:** Insurance producer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** Corgi’s company producer-license table lists 50 jurisdictions: 49 states and the District of Columbia, including DC license 3003091619. New Mexico does not appear in the table and is not included here; the omission does not establish that Corgi is unlicensed there. The company-reported table has no stated as-of date and does not establish product availability.[^13]
- [TechInsurance](/insurance-providers/techinsurance) — **Entity:** Specialty Program Group LLC; **role:** Insurance producer; **checked:** 2026-09-28. **Scope:** TechInsurance’s current licensing page names Specialty Program Group LLC / SPG Insurance Solutions and lists state license numbers, but labels Rhode Island “Individual licenses” rather than identifying a license for the named agency. RI is omitted because this disclosure does not establish agency authority there; this is a search limitation, not an assertion that the company is unlicensed. The remaining state entries are company-reported and are not an insurance product availability map.[^17]

## Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Washington

1. Is each Washington unit a UTC common carrier, household-goods carrier, or another registered vehicle for purposes of its filing?
2. Does the insurer have a continuous Form E or Form G on file, and when will it submit the Form K and replacement filing?
3. For household goods, is the unit exactly 10,000 pounds GVWR or more, and does the separate Form H show the matching cargo limit?
4. For a hazardous-material vehicle, which listed commodity and packaging category did the insurer use to set the UTC filing?

## Commercial Auto in Washington: FAQ

### Do Washington UTC common carriers use the ordinary 25/50/10 minimums?

No. RCW 46.30.020 excludes registered UTC common and contract carriers from that chapter, and WAC 480-14-250 sets separate liability filing amounts by GVWR and operation.[^1][^3]

### How much cargo insurance does a Washington household-goods carrier file?

$10,000 for household goods in vehicles below 10,000 pounds GVWR and $20,000 for vehicles at or above 10,000 pounds; proof is due with the permit application and kept at the carrier’s main office.[^5]
